Punta Carretas Shopping Center: Jailhouse Shopping
  • Tip Rating:
  • I was told that this shopping center was formerly a jailhouse. Now its a real great shopping center with lots of boutiques and a great food area.Dont forget to visit the fashonable "confitaria" at the groundfloor!

You will find practically everything in the many shops even all you need for your mate equipment!

Punta Carretas Shopping Center: Where's the jail?
  • Tip Rating:
  • Where once was a jail, nowadays there is a fancy shopping mall... Yes, you are reading it right: a J - A - I - L. Punta Carretas Shopping Center is situated at an amazing building, the Penal de Punta Carretas (which was recycled, obviously!) There you will find all kind of shops, cinemas and restaurants; of course, it is not very different of this kind of places in any other city of the world, but the building and its history are really interesting.

Tres Cruces: Shopping Mall and Bus Station
  • Tip Rating:
  • Montevideo has four shopping malls, but the most curious ones are Punta Carretas (previous tip), situated in an ancient jail, and this one, Tres Cruces, which is at the same time shopping mall and bus station, so there you can buy a shirt, have lunch or take a bus to Punta del Este!

    the flea-market: at Plaza Costitution
  • Tip Rating:
  • Plaza Costitution / Plaza Matriz is the perfect place to browse a fleamarket for unique goods for your collections of what-ever. The things you will get there are really interesting, no cheap souvenirs for tourists but rare and interesting antiques things of the good old times.

Take a look at my photographs, there is a big variety of goods for sale.

I did not check any prices

    General Shopping
  • Tip Rating:
  • Montevideo is not the best place for Shopping. Besides some typical stuff you won't find anything you wouldn't find in other cities, prices of things related to electronics are much more expensive than those in the USA or Europe. You can find though some good prices in well-known clothes brands (such as Lacoste, Levis, etc) at the local malls.
You should also visit "Manos Del Uruguay" at the Punta Carretas Shopping Center where the finest wool made clother of all Uruguay are at great prices.

Mercado de los Artesanos: Arts and Crafts
  • Tip Rating:
  • Uruguay (not only Montevideo) has high quality crafts. All kind stuff can be found ins several craft markets, but I do recommend Mercado de los Artesanos (Artisans Market).

Uruguay (no solamente Montevideo) tiene artesanÍas de alta calidad. Este tipo de objetos se puede adquirir en diversos mercados, pero yo recomiendo el Mercado de los Artesanos.

Hand-made crafts of all kind (leather, pottery, bronze, wood, stone, wool, batik...)

Artesanías de todo tipo (en cuero, cerámica, bronce, piedra, lana, batik...)

    From 1 to 100 dollars.

Looking for the right stone at
    the right price.

Brazil and Uruguay are known as the sources of many beautiful geodes. After missing making a purchase of one I liked in Rio for my wife's charter school, I went on a search in Montevideo. I found a shop near the Mercado del Puerto with a beautiful large stone for 150 dollars. Compared to other stores in the city the price seemed reasonable, but it was too large to haul around so I delayed any purchase until the end of my trip in Uruguay. On my travels I learned that in northwest Uruguay one could purchase a similar stone for one tenth to one fifth that price.

    Sunday Street market
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Sunday street market is surprisingly extensive (could it be 30 blocks worth?). I love markets for people watching and exploring and in this market it was easy. It was not too crowded and there seemed to be just about anything you might need. I bought a plug converter, a money belt, some toothpaste and various fruits and pasteries.

Although there are crafts, old books, hardware, CDs, new clothes, fruit and vegetables, it seems that much of what you will see is just junk. The theme being, my junk might just be your treasure.

This is the challenge: unique items can mean unique prices that will have to be negotiated. Otherwise the market works and you won't need to bargain for good prices for common items like fruit, for example.

    Tamboriles
Like I wrote on my local customs tips, camdombe was invented in Uruguay and is also very popular. If you happen to like it and wanna buy a tamboril, go to Av. Rivera 4743 and buy it to Adrian Icasuriaga, he is my cousin and he wil give you a free lesson if you but a tamboril to him.
