 | New York City Carmine's Reviews | Tips 1 - 10 of 22 | | There's always a wait at Carmine's, even since the theater district location added an entire floor. I go regularly with a group of food-frenzied friends who won't even consider an alternate restaurant. Be warned: every dish serves six hungry people. Their stuffed salmon is incredible, so's their Flintstone-sized porterhouse steak grilled and garlicky. Other favorites are the meatballs and spaghetti, chicken marsala, stuffed artichoke, and incredible desserts -- warm chocolate bread pudding, Italian cheesecake, and tiramisu top the list. I'm sure there are hundreds of Carmine's recommendations on this website, so I'll keep mine short and hopeful not repetitive. This family style restaurant caters to groups of three or more..anything less and its not worth going. You'll spend too much and have too much food left over. Not a quiet and romantic place for two! Make reservations..very important! The food is great and portions are large. Wine is also very good. Its fast paced and vibrant. There are two that I know of: one off 44th Street (which is purely touristy) and the one on Broadway all the way up near Central Park - 90th & 91st Streets. My recommendation is to go up to the 90/91 Streets location; you'll a) get a reservation b) get more attention c) able to linger without everyone breathing on you.
Everything is my favorite here!!! can't go wrong with any dish! There are two locations for this restaurant. And the Theatre district one has much better food overall than the one on 91st and Broadway. This place is SO busy you need to really plan ahead and not have a large group. It is a family style restaurant where dishes are delivered for the table and everyone gets some off the main plates. As the orders are truly huge. I was most recently back to the location on Broadway at 91st street and was for the most part disappointed. The company was fantastic and we had quite the good time but the food itself was hit or miss for me.
Highlights of the food here to me are the desserts. The Titanic and the Strawberry Shortcake were good. I really enjoy the calamari here and the penne ala vodka is good as well. At least at the 91st street one I'd avoid anything off the grill. We were lucky enough to meet up with some people we'd met on the Internet and had a fabulous evening here. The place can get very busy and noisy, but I think that adds to the atmosphere. Lovely cocktails, service was great, and the food brilliant.
As I've only been once, I don't have a favourite, but we had Calimari to start and then a pasta dish which was lovely. The portions are HUGE which is why it's advisable to go in a group of 6 or more. Carmine's has two locations, one in Times Square and the other on the Upper West Side. I have been to both and have to admit that my experience was better at the Upper West Side location than the Times Square one (although that could be because I visited the Times Square location after a play so it was sort of late...and it was St. Patties Day!) The food here is great. I am Italian and I am very critical about Italian food so I have to admit that this place has my stamp of approval. They portions are served "family-style" so don't do it alone. I suggest that each entree can feed about 3 average eaters (the pasta dishes can feed more I would say). The prices are reasonable since you are feeding a few people per Entree but make sure you bring your reading glasses since there are no paper menus at Carmine's. There are large blackboards on the walls that have the menu and pricelist on them. It's cute and irritating at the same time for someone who can't see very far! The places are kinda large however, they do not accept reservations for parties under 6 for dinner (between 7:00 to closing) so make sure that you allow enough time during the crowded times and holidays.
I think that everything is pretty good on the menu but here are some of my favorites: Lemon Chicken - I have actually had a fight with someone over the last piece of the chicken and subsequently didn't speak to her for a year! It's that good!!! Caesar Salad - Its one of the best that I have had. My only complaint is that there is never enough dressing for my taste. Chicken Parm - Yummy, Yummy...No need to say anything else (that goes for the Veal Parmesan too!). Penne al a vodka - I could eat pasta every day for the rest of my life and I would be a happy (abet, fat) little camper. Theirs is one of the best that I have had. This is a great place to eat in the theater district--be sure to make reservations way in advance because you will not want to miss this place! Large portions of great food, and if you still have room, have the NY cheesecake or the bread pudding. Do not order your own entree!!!! It will be enough for at least two-three people. This is a very popular but fun place with good Italian food in a somewhat homey atmosphere. It is in the heart of NYC not far from Times Square.

Prepare to wait in line with the theater goers. I think the food is good quality and am always happy with my meal. The portions are family style, which basically means "Huge". Ordering one dish is enough to feed four people. I always over order and wind up with a doggie bag. We came to Carmine's for Easter dinner with our family. We went to the Upper West Side location (2450 Broadway (212)362-2200). It was way too much food and not up to the standards I would normally expect. It was my first time at this location so maybe the difference in chef is to blame.
The Titanic dessert is delicious. Yummy flourless chocolate torte smothered in ice cream, cholcolate sauce, whipped cream and bananas. The Carmine's salad is always a good starter. I love the fried calamari, it's so crispy and delicious. The Ravioli is always creamy and tasty. I simply love the Mixed Seafood in red sauce. All the clams, mussels, shrimp, scallops, lobster and crab....absolute heaven. Family style portions of Italian dishes come lavishly prepared. Noise level is high as families chatter happily with one another over meals, so expect an atmosphere filled with laughter and talk. Service can be slow at times, but waitstaff makes up for it in friendliness. Celebrated a birthday here once- waitstaff came out with a cupcake and a candle and the whole group sang "happy birthday" with much gusto. Wait can be long at certain branches, such as the one on 44th Street. Personally, I frequent the one on the upper west side more because it's more convenient and much shorter lines.
Chicken Cacciatore is delicious- white wine and chicken stock, with tomatoes and basil. The veal parm is also great. Leave a Comment
