I highly suggest walking around Las Vegas...you see so much! The people are hysterical, and by walking you can pop in and out of many places with no commitment to staying.

Alternatively, take a cab to one section and then walk towards your final destination from there. Of course, in summer this may not be a viable option.

Walking: People movers all over the place
  • Tip Rating:
  • All along The Strip are "people movers". Whether they're moving sidewalks or escalators, they're all over the place. I assume it's for the safety of pedestrians, so they can cross the street a little more easily and not run in front of cars. Or perhaps to help traffic congestion. Or both...

    Walking: Crossing the Strip?
  • Tip Rating:
  • Just as in Monaco (Europe), there are pedestrian bridges with elevators or escalators over the road. Safe and handy to make pictures of the Strip.

Walking: If you plan to go everywhere...
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you plan to go everywhere on foot, just be aware that there are some long distances between hotels. For example, I have walked from the Mirage to the Luxor. It took about 45 minutes. Here's another pic of me with a group in '97 before heading back to the Strip from the Freemont Street Experience.

    Getting to vegas is easy.

There is a big International airport, so as a train station. Once in vegas, you can use taxies and public transportation. You can rent a car, even an exotic one like a Corvette, Viper, Porsche, etc. That's if you have tons of money to spend. You can also rent a helicopter with a pilot. There are transport tricycles around but you don't have to pedal. Just look for guys on bikes with an American flag bike dress. If all this not good enough for you, than you can get on a pirate ship!

Here is a good advise: Do not drive in Las Vegas during the evening hours. The city comes alive and traffic jam is created each day. People slow down with their cars to look at the attractions and they keep up the traffic from moving normally.

The best way to get around, is walking on your feet. When destined to a Hotel / Casino complex, use their phone number for reservation. They usually provide you with local transportation as a complimentary service.

Walking is a great way to see Las Vegas. You can wander in and out the various hotels and get a great feel for the city.

If you're looking at a map of the Strip, the distances can be a little misleading ... what looks like a close walk really isn't.

We spent our first full day walking the strip and only got as far as the Venetian (we started at the MGM Grand). For hotels that are a litle farther away you may want to take a taxi.

Walking: You can rent a car to drive...
  • Tip Rating:
  • You can rent a car to drive around; but walking is ok too.... after all, the casinos are all well connected and next to each other on the strip, so you might find a bit silly to have to be parking from casino to casino.

Walking: As always, rent your own...
  • Tip Rating:
  • As always, rent your own vehicle if you can. Although, if there's any place in this country that doesn't require car, it's here. Walk, walk, walk, walk, walk. Rent, be free and go everywhere you can. Then go back a 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc...time so that you can see everything you didn't have time for your 1st visit.

The best way to get around the hot spot is by walking. If you plan on sticking around the Las Vegas Boulevard...it will take longer just to drive through the crowds then just parking your car and walking on your own two feet. There is so much to see, and it's good excerise :) Just make sure you have comfy shoes.

    Walking: Bring good walking shoes
Even if you are just staying in your casino, you will be walking. These places are huge. Pretty shoes are great, but comfy shoes are heaven. Walking up and down the strip can be fun, but I wouldn't advise walking to downtown. Not only is it 3 more miles, but, it is not a safe area. Take a taxi if you must go downtown. Also, Las Vegas is not a town of walkers, so other than going up and down the strip, you really have to leave town to walk and see something interesting. Go to Red Rock or Mount Charleston.
