Trains: Train Travel
  • Tip Rating:
  • I have traveled by train to London from Edinburgh and York, and have traveled from London to Dover as well. I have heard some people complain about train travel in England, but I have never had a problem with the trains here. In fact I've found them to be quite comfortable to ride on and a great way to see the English countryside.

Although you have to be careful with some trips (like going from London to Dover), as sometimes at a station in the journey the train will split, with the first half of the carriages going one way, and the back half going another. But don't worry, there are plenty of announcements informing you of this (if it is going to happen on your train), so you shouldn't have any problems.

On most trains you will find a snack cart (sandwiches, chips, drinks, etc.) or bar available if you get hungry or thirsty.

On the longer trips (like from London to Edinburgh) you may want to reserve your seat if you are going during a time of the week when it is particularly busier than normal (like weekends).

Also at the train stations you should find luggage storage available, plus there are ATMs, newsagent, and cafes or vendors.

The only downside to traveling by train in the UK is the price. If you are from outside the UK you can get a rail-pass or inter-rail pass (depending on the country you come from), they are usually flexible and can sometimes be used in multiple countries, but please confirm that this is available for you with your travel agent first. If you can get one it will make your trip a lot cheaper.

Trains: From Gatwick Airport to Central London
  • Tip Rating:
  • The best option to travel from Gatwick airport to London Victoria is by train, there are two ways by gatwick express or with southern trains. I did it with southern and it was good for price 17.20 pounds return open and for time only take 35 minutes and only have 2 stops on Clapham Junction and East Croydon. The difference with gatwick express is you save aboot 9 pounds and only take 5 minutes more to reach London Victoria

    Trains: London to Gatwick
  • Tip Rating:
  • As London is such a huge city, there are so many different train, bus, coach and cab routes to the various aiports and I see there have been various posts (unsuprisingly!) regarding this subject, so I will kick off my London tips, with one of the basics, for visitors.

Most people here travel to Gatwick Airport by overland train from London Victoria station.
Catch a Brighton train and disembark at Gatwick. The cost is around £19 return.
Prices are more in the rush hour, and cheaper after 9.30. See National Rail Link fbelow or Journey Planning.
    National Rail

The Gatwick Express is a rather expensive option and half the time, is not an express at all, crawling along infuriatingly. The one time I caught it, the toilets didn't even work, although they are nicer trains in general, you are really better off with the overland.
    Gatwick Express
    Tel: +44 (0)845 850 1530 for a recorded timetable

You can also catch a National Express coach from Victoria Bus station. This is a slightly cheaper option and their website is here :
    National Express

The Gatwick Flyer Tel: +44 (0)1708 730 555) runs to destinations east of London, and coaches operate from the South Terminal station only.

There are two terminals at Gatwick Airport, There is a free Transit train, which links the North and South terminals 24 hours a day.

    Driving :
The airport is linked to the M23 motorway. Turn off at junction 9 and follow signs for the airport. London Gatwick is also accessible from the A23 London-Brighton Road.

    Trains: GNER all the way
  • Tip Rating:
  • Trains are to me, the best way of travelling overland over any distance. Not counting motorbikes of course... ;-) I don't like flying and the national coaches are evil things.

Usually the trains in the UK aren't much cop either, but they get you there and are the most comfortable way to travel by far. What else can you walk around in and even visit a cafe?

The problems here lie in the variety of train companies and the lack of coordination between them- this Xmas they didn't all release the timetables, so booking complete journeys is not possible!

Booking ahead saves LOADS- £29 rtn instead of £99 single.

    Trains: Gatwick Express
  • Tip Rating:
  • From Gatwick you can hop on the Express to Victoria station. It leaves every 15 minutes and gets you there in 30 minutes.

    Trains: Paddington Station
  • Tip Rating:
  • Paddington Station is one of the busiest in London and is one of the main gateways to the Midlands and South-West. There are 12 mainline platforms and also a main Underground Station serving the Circle, Hammersmith & City and Bakerloo lines.

The ticket office is located on the main concourse and is open at all times the station is operating. You can make advanced bookings and reservations here. Also located on the concourse is a booking office for the Heathrow Express and Thames Trains.

In a bid to stop ticketless travel a few of the platforms have automatic ticket barriers like on the Underground to stop people getting through without tickets.

There is a Left Luggage Office which is located on Platform 12 and is open Monday-Saturday 07:00-23:00 and Sunday 08:00-22:00
The Lost Property Office is also located on Platform 12 and is open Monday-Friday 09:00-17:00

Located on and around the concourse are several shops and places to get things to eat and drink these include two bars, 2 coffee shops, Yo Sushi, Sainsbury`s, WH Smiths, Thorntons, Ladbrokes, Sock Shop, Burger King, Victoria Wine, The Link and the Tie Rack.

Also located on the concourse is a statue of one of the most famous bears in the world, Paddington who was named after the station.

Trains: Virgin trains from Euston to the Midlands
  • Tip Rating:
  • From 20.12.03 Virgin will start to run some of their new electric Pendlino trains on their Euston to Birmingham, Wolverhampton and Northampton services. These are the new 140mph tilting trains, but initially they will not be exceeding 125mph.

    Trains: One day travel card
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you want to go to London and not run around and buy bus or tube tickets when you are there, ask for a 'one day travel card' at your train station. This card will get you to London, around London and back home and is not much more expensive than just a return train ticket. It is for unlimited use of the public transport in London for that day.

    Trains: Beautiful Train Stations
  • Tip Rating:
  • Back in the States, any building that looked this good would either be a museum or privately owned. Here in London, it's a train station. I love this town! :)

This is Marylebone Station, one of the prettiest, both inside and out.
