Trains: Mainline Stations
  • Tip Rating:
  • Liverpool Street Station is in the City of London.
Hardly any of the other Main Line Stations are actually in The City of London. For trains going to the west, e.g. Reading, Oxford, Bristol, Gloucester, Worcester and Hereford leave from Paddington; see VT page for PADDINGTON.
Trains for Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Stafford, Manchester, Liverpool, Lake District and Glasgow go from Euston.
Feb 2003 Euston was reported to have the 4th worst record in the country for illegal trespass and vandalism with 29 incidents in 2002/03.
By December 2007 the West Coast Main Line modernisation between Euston and Glasgow will be just about completed.

    Trains: Heathrow Express
  • Tip Rating:
  • When arriving at heathrow, many people take the tube because they can buy a travel card that they can use in London for the day as well

My advice is take the Heathrow Express, you'll see signs to the station from inside the terminal. You have to buy a seperate ticket but it only takes about 15 minutes to get into Paddington station (which is zone 1 central london) and the trains are air conditioned and there is ample room for you and your baggage

The tube on the other hand (depending on engineering works) can take about an hour or more and depending on the time of day you are likely to be crammed in with all the other commuters. There is no air conditioning in the tube and during the summer it is really unbearable. The worse thing about it though is having to go up and down lots of stairs in the tube with your bags... don't expect many people to help you out.

the heathrow express trains leave every 15 minutes can be booked before you arrive via the website (see below) or at the station. The trains travel in both directions to and from heathrow and a return ticket can be bought.

when i last checked the price of the ticket is £13.50

I'm all for spending the $$$ and/or GBP when convenience and service warrants it. But the Eurostar isn't that. Perhaps if you have a couple of weeks' advance notice on exactly when you'll need your zippy trip under the English Channel, this method works. But the walk-up fare (for 2nd class too, mind you!!) is ludicrous with a capital L. Go ahead and buy either a one-way from Heathrow to Brussels or Paris on British Midland, or get yourself to one of the other London airports and do the Easyjet thing to continental Europe. Money will be saved. A lot of it, too.

  • Onboard the Heathrow Express - London

    Express

When flying into Heathrow or Stansted Airports in London, an easy and fast way to get into the city centre is using their express trains (the same goes for if you are in the city and want to get out to one of these airports).

The Heathrow Express goes to all terminals at Heathrow airport and then takes you directly to Paddington Station, which is about a 15 minute trip (add 8 minutes if you're coming from Terminal 4). There are departures every 15 minutes (check website below for more details on train times). An open single trip (Express Class - same as Economy Class) will cost GBP 14.50 for adults, an open-return will cost GBP 27.00 (each is cheaper by a pound if you buy it on-line).

The Stansted Express takes you from the main terminal at the airport to Liverpool St. Station, this trip takes about 45 minutes. There are departures about every 15 minutes (for train times check website below). An open single trip (Express Class) will cost you GBP 15.00 for an adult, an open return will cost you GBP 25.00.

The trains are nice, there is heaps of room for storing your luggage. There are quiet areas on the train where you can't use mobile phones or iPods/Discmans.

While it can be a bit of an expensive ride, it is an easy fuss free way to get in and out of the city.

    Trains: Stansted Express
  • Tip Rating:
  • Stansted is one of the smaller london airports and is not actually located in london... which is great for me because it takes me about 15 minutes to drive there... but for those not fortunate enough to know someone close to this airport or want to pay a taxi fee that would make Saudi Royals blush the Standsted express is for you.

Comfortable air conditioned trains with room for you to put your luggage will get you to liverpool st station (zone 1 central london) in 45 minutes. If you're staying in north london or need to catch the victoria line, some of the trains do stop at Tottenham Hale Station (zone 3 on the victoria line) trains are depart every 15 minutes and the tickets can be bought at the website below or at the station.

    Trains: Intercity Trains
  • Tip Rating:
  • You can catch trains out to other parts of London from certain mainline stations, eg
    1. Victoria
    2. Kings Cross, St Pancras
    3. Farringdon
    4. Euston
    5. Liverpool Street

And some of these stations also have links to other parts of the U.K.

  • Eurostar arrival at Waterloo - London
    Eurostar arrival at Waterloo
    by GUYON

London is at 2H 35 from Paris (Gare du Nord) by the Eurostar.
It is quicker and cheaper than plane which needs a transfert to the airports.
There are at least one train each hour from 6 AM to 22PM.
We use to spend a Saturday in London, leaving Paris at 7 or 7:15 AM, arriving at Waterloo at around 8:40AM (local time), turning back at 7PM, arriving in Paris at around 10:40PM.
We prefer a one day trip than a week end because the London hotels are expensive and we have had some bad experience of unsufficient heating.
For security purpose, the entry on the Eurostar area is organized on the airport basis. The luggage and the identity are controled. We must arrive with 30 min advance : the control lasts at least 15 min
Price : 35 euros one way with a reservation 6 weeks in advance.

The train can be delaied. Durinf our last travel, after 30 min the train stopped and went back to the station. We changed train and we arrived 2 hours late. In compensation we got a 50pct reduction on our next trip on Eurostar.

    Trains: Eurostar/ Waterloo Station.
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is waterloo Train Station. It is a very busy station, with all the comfort and trapings for tourists. I have always enjoyed using the Eurostar from Paris because of its convinience.

  • The trains to and from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry can be found at Platform 9 ¾ inside King Cross Station. Please note: it is actually invisible to Muggles. You may glimpse Harry Potter here during breaks in the Hogwarts school calendar. A magic wand is required for inspection before boarding.
