Churches: Visit Madrid's Second Cathedral
The Roman Catholic Church is administratively divided in dioceses, territorial units administered by a bishop. A cathedral being the church where the bishop has its seat (cathedra), there can be, in theory, only one catholic cathedral in every city. And yet, Madrid hosts a second less known catholic cathedral which corresponds to the non-territorially based military diocese of Spain. It stands a few steps lower from the Main Street (Calle Mayor), that leads from Orient Square to the Sun Gate.

The church was built in the 17th century in the Madrileño Baroque style and made part of the Convent of the Very Holy Sacrament, run by the so-called Bernardas nuns. It was purchased and restored by the Ministry of Defence in the late 20th century to make it the seat of the Spanish Military Diocese.

Churches: Iglesia de las Calatravas
Leftover from the nonextant Monasterio Real de la Concepción, Iglesia de las Calatravas dates back from the 17th century. Its façade, however, was reconstructed in the 19th century. It is located on Calle de Alcalá among some of Madrid's landmark buildings.

    Churches: Parroquia de San Gines
Although modified over time, the existing parish on Calle del Arenal dates from the 17th century. It was built on the site of a previous 13th century church. The façade overlooking Calle del Arenal was only added in the 19th century, following a fire that partially destroyed the structure.

    Churches: Parroquia San Sebastián
Located on Calle de Atocha, the Church dedicated to San Sebastián dates back from the 16th and 17th centuries. During the civil war, the church was partially destroyed and rebuilt thereafter.

When I got out of Principe Pio Station I couldn’t understand why so many people were walking towards the church. I was very lucky because the day I visited the church (june 13th) it was the day that there was a celebration about him! The church is worth to visit because there are some beautiful frescoes on the ceilings. All of them are painted by famous Goya! He is also buried here. Check his statue in front of the church in the little park.

The church was built by Fontana in 1790. There is a small entrance fee but it was for free that day.

  • Address: 5 Paseo San Antonio de la Florida

  • Directions: From Principe Pio metro, walk at Paseo de la Florida for about 5 minutes.

Churches: Visit the Church of Saint Francis the Great
Although it is not very well known, the Church of Saint Francis the Great is, in my opinion, one of Madrid's most beautiful religious buildings. With a 33-metre diameter, its splendid dome is the largest in Spain and one of the largest in the world at that time. It was inspired by the domes of the Roman Pantheon and the Holy Sepulchre Church in Jerusalem; and is an unmistakable part of the city's skyline when seen from the West, even if the proposed drum was never built.

Legend goes that the very Saint Francis of Assisi founded a Franciscan convent here while he was doing his pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. In the 18th century, King Charles III, a fervent devote of Saint Frances, ordered that the convent be replaced by a splendid Neo-classical church. Several architects intervened in its design, including the famous Sabatini, one of the authors of the Royal Palace and the Alcala Gate.

The building was expropriated along with many other properties of the Catholic Church in the 19th century and, for some time, it was used as a military barrack. There were even plans to transform it into a National Pantheon, but it was finally returned to the Franciscan Order.

After decades of meticulous restoration, the interior of the church has recovered its former splendour. Among the valuable works of art that ornate the church and its chapels, the portrait of Saint Bernardino by Francisco de Goya stands out as one of the masterpieces of Spanish 19th century painting. The base of the dome is surrounded by 12 impressive 3-metre high statues of the Apostles and there are many other interesting frescoes and paintings, including a Zurbaran.

  • Built in the 15th century, Iglesia de San Jerónimo el Real and its nonextant monastery were used by Catholic monarchs as a place of retreat, or retiro in Spanish, then located just outside the city of Madrid. The function of this monastery and church later bestowed the nearby Parque del Retiro with its name. In the war of independence against Napoleon, the monastery was destroyed and the church severely damaged. While the monastery was never rebuilt, the church underwent several restorations since then, including one just recently. Los Jerónimos, as it is also known, is located right behind Museo del Prado.
