For me, the only way was to take a flight.
Lots of people drive there themselves, even from Norway. That's usually a three days drive for a family, but I met some people that never spend more than two days driving from Norway... Using a plane takes you almost all the way, and rental cars are often used from the airfield. I recommend having access to a car if you want to do more than explore the gorgeous beaches. Alicante Airport is only 15 minutes from Alicante itself by taxi which in 2001 only cost €11.

We used Easyjet from Geneva to Alicante for this trip. We booked up 6 months in advance, the day the flights were available on their website. Otherwise costs were pretty high.
When comparing prices a few weeks before departure, we found that last minute deals with some major carriers were very cheap... so shop around. Theme: Airplane

Alicante is working hard to improve its public transport. New tramlines are beeing built. A good example is the tram from the harbour of Alicante to El Campello. In the near future Alicante will become a tram city. Leave a Comment

We started our journey to Alicante from Torremolinos. We rented a Ford Focus, four-door diesel for three days. We began by taking the MA - 20 and then the A -7 the Autovia del Mediterraneo. Then it was onto A-45 Autovia De Malaga toward Cordoba/Granada/Seville. Then A-92 toward Granada. Then A92N toward Murcia. Then A-70 toward Alicante. Then N-332 to Alicante (norte),
Total kms 1241 there and back to Torremolinos.

If you are in neighboring town, yes its worth the distance, take the train. For more information on schedules: http://www.renfe.es/ingles/
If you are planning to stay at the Uni residence (which is common) you can take the city bus right into town and even into San Juan for the beach. As for anything else, your legs serve well :) Its a friendly town, either way, don't go walking alone, you simply never know.
