If you want to see a goose in Barcelona, just go to Cathedral's cloister. It is a quite curious circumstance to find fowls inside a gothic cathedral... Si quieres ver gansos en Barcelona, basta con que vayas al claustro de la Catedral; es un detalle por demás curioso encontrar aves de corral en el interior de una catedral gótica... Leave a Comment

Inside the beautifully cool interior of Barcelona Cathedral are some wonderfully ornate side chapels, paintings and gilding. The high ceiling has carved round plagues at each axis and the patches of weathering on the roof rather than detracting from the decoration actually add to the feel of the place, giving a sense of history and continuity. The choir stalls are handsomely decorated with coats of arms and all through the cathedral are wonderfully rich colours and decorative flourishes. It is an incredibly impressive building, a focal point for the area and community, imposing yet also welcoming and peaceful. Well worth a visit. The construction of the cathedral started in XIIIth century and finished in the beginning of XXth century. On saturday and sunday afternoon people gather on the square in front of the Cathedral and dance Sardana which is a local dance. It's very nice experience to see them gather and dance with such a joy.

It was in renovation of the exterior when we were there. So we didn't get to see the full picture outside.. But the interior was brilliant.. ************************************************************************* Its history begins in a small chapel of the 1st century, on that building it was built a romantic church (11th century) of the one that remain remainders in the entry of Sant. Iu. In 1298 the construction of the present Gothic temple was initiated and the last detail, the central needle, was incorporated in 1913. The chorus is a true work of art, the same as the crucifix of the Christ of Lepanto (16th century), the crypt is of Santa Eulàlia, the patron saint of Barcelona and the neighborhood Claustro (cloister). well, not really under construction, but the whole main front of the cathedral is scaffolded. This main church of Barcelona is often crowded of tourists, so I have the impression that most of locals prefer to go to other churches, as e.g. the Santa Maria Del Mar, another imposant church, even much older than the cathedral. The cathedral is worth the visit with its beautiful painted windows and an enormous organ. But I spend only a short moment inside, more strolling around in the patio (cloister) of the cathedral with a little palm garden where traditionally live some gants. In the middle ages these gants stood sentinel over the art treasure of the cathedral, because their gaggle and twitter chases away every intruder. In 1298 the construction of the cathedral started. The cathedral is quite compact in size. It is made in the time of Jaume II and in Gothic style, with its Roman Capella de Santa Llúcia. The church is fantastic to see and it is also home to some geese. Yes there are geese in this church!! Leave a Comment Directions: Take the metro to Jaume I.

Wilfred the Hairy (Guifré el Pelós) was a character who unified Catalonia in the Dark Ages, a sort of Catalan Alfred the Great. He was Count of Barcelona in the ninth century, and was fittingly a contemporary, and nominally a subject, of the Carolingian emperor Charles the Bald. Disappointingly, some historians now question whether or not he actually was hairy, or whether his soubriquet became misinterpreted over time (rather like the argument about whether Ethelred was really unready). Unfortunately, there are few traces of the hirsute one to be found in modern Barcelona and his tomb is in the church of Santa Maria del Ripoll in the north of Catalonia. A suitably hairy portrayal of Wilfred can be seen on one of the portals of the Cathedral, killing a dragon. Unlike St George, who also adorns the portal, Wilfred needs no armour to protect him. One of the entrances to the Cathedral is through the cloistered courtyard. It’s a wonderful space, stone flagged floors, arched recesses, gothic columns and lush green foliage. One can easily imagine walking slowly around the cloisters in quiet contemplation. Ah, except for the interruptions of the geese which share the space. There are 13 geese, each representing one-year of the life of the martyred Santa Eulalia, the patron Saint of Barcelona. One does get the sense that the geese feel they are the real owners of the courtyard; everyone else is just an interloper! And they are probably right! One thing you have to see is the Cathedral's cloisters, which dates from the 14th century. It has a garden of magnolias, palms and fountains and many geese, which are quite funny to watch.
