Drug dealers / Junkies: Red Light District
  • Tip Rating:
  • In the red light area, when someone approaches you and offer you drugs, just keep walking!!! duh! Some of these dealers go out of their way to chase you down and almost force you to buy their s#$%. Other than that, the red light district is not as dangerous as most people picture it to be... you'll get used to the "sights" after sometime. :-)

Drug dealers / Junkies: A warning to Jewish people
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is NO joke. It isn't a political statement either. This is a serious warning.

Despite Amsterdam's reputation as a tolerant city, in the past years there have been several incidents that made me write this. A warning to Jewish people and to people who 'look Jewish'; it is advised not to go to certain parts of Amsterdam. You really should be fine in the centre, but the old neighbourhoods outside the centre, especially to the west of it, can be dangerous. You risk verbal abuse and worse (spitting, violence) from groups of 'young locals from Northern African descendance'. Why? As they claim themselves it's 'because they disagree with Israeli politics'. Well, so do I, but it's no reason to harrass ANY individual. But then these aren't reasonable people, they're scum and usually involved in crime as well.

Sorry, my tip isn't politically correct. Reality isn't always.

(the tip group was added by accident and cannot be changed it seems. It's not completely inappropriate though.)

Drug dealers / Junkies: Beware of dealers
  • Tip Rating:
  • Although on the whole it is safe to walk in Amsterdam after dark on your own it is not really in some parts of Red Light District. There are dealers, street prostitutes & their pimps, muggers, wierdo's etc. Dealers try to sell you their wares in dodgy corners.
Keep to the well lit areas those with red lights should be fine. Most clubs have their own private security.

My advice is just pass by rather quickly look confident & do not do anything which suggests you may have cash - looking unhappy is one way to get unnoticed.

Drug dealers / Junkies: beware of crack fiends by centraal station
  • Tip Rating:
  • Beware of toothless crack fiends that try to offer you accomodations.

we were stalked all over the city by one of them, despite the fact we said we were not interested.

he was trying to sell us a room in a boarded up hotel.

I'm sure that person is probably still there, trying to lure unsuspecting tourists .

Drug dealers / Junkies: If you're not comfotable Handling Drug dealers....
  • Tip Rating:
  • When cruising around the Red Light District at night you are definately going to be offered several different drugs on the street. If you're not comfortable with this, stay away from this area late at night. I found Amsterdam quite a safe city but the dealers got a little annoying after a while. If you are looking for anything, make sure its sold from a regulated shop.

Drug dealers / Junkies: Drugs and more drugs
  • Tip Rating:
  • Before we arrived in Amsterdam, we were well aware of the drug reputation here. The legality of this addiction we think is very sad.. albeit many people thinking it wonderfully democratic.

I was approached once by this chap whose eyes looked dazed.. he was carrying a box of goodies and was keen for me to buy. I said I wasn't interested, he then just asked me for money.

As a woman in a strange city (hubby was doing his own thing for a bit), I felt very uncomfortable and ill at ease.

I also felt dreadfully sorry for this man, who was an addict and needed help.

There is so much going for Amsterdam in the way of culture, history and beauty, and this, sadly, ruins it.

Drug dealers / Junkies: Tons of Drug dealers
  • Tip Rating:
  • Despite Amsterdam's reputation for drugs, drugs are not legal there. Although walking through the streets of Amsterdam you will be bombarded by dealers trying to sell you Cocaine, Extacy, and herion. Best thing to do is just keep walking by.

Drug dealers / Junkies: Just ignore!!!
  • Tip Rating:
  • You may be hassled by men bothering you to buy cocaine and ecstacy drugs from them, especially if they know you are foreign. JUST IGNORE them and walk away, and they SHOULD leave you alone.

Drug dealers / Junkies: Will that be oregano, powder...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Will that be oregano, powder sugar or aspirin?

Amsterdam's a place where almost anything goes and it endures a lot of narcotourists. If you do come over chances are that someone on the street will try and sell you whatever mind altering substance you may be inclined to buy. Word from the wise: the stuff you buy on the street is generally nothing more than repackaged supermarket goods.

Drug dealers / Junkies: Watch out for dealers.
  • Tip Rating:
  • Lets face it most tourists to Amsterdam will (at some point) venture through the red light district. If you keep your wits about you (bit tricky with all the haze from the coffee shops) you shouldn't run into trouble. Don't loiter by the bridges and street corners, dealers reguarly push their goods onto tourists here. Don't start conversation with them, just try to ignore them.
