Canal boat: The typical tourist transportation
  • Tip Rating:
  • A visit to Amsterdam is unthinkable without a visit on the canals.

There are different boats to choose from for your trip on the canals.

The tour boat can be found in front of Central Station, at the Damrak, Rokin or close to the Rijksmuseum. The non-stop ride will take about 1 to 1.5 hours. Make sure you get a boat with a real guide and an open roof during summertime. The best time is during late afternoon when it isn't too crowded. Price: 8 EUR.
Canal bus is a boat where you can hop on and off at several points of interest (musea, shopping centres and attractions). They sell day passes for 16 EUR, that are valid until 12 am the next day. There is no guide on board, the boat operates like a bus service.
Museum boat is a good way to combine a boat trip with musea visits. A day pass gives you discount in several musea. The boat leaves from Central Station.

As you might have guessed, there are other method of travel on the canals. These methods usually come in the form of floating type things that range in size from little, to really big. First, of course, are the tour boats. There are a number of different tour boat companies. They all provide the same basic service of a guided tour of Amsterdam via canal. In some of the tours the driver presses a button and a prerecorded tour begins in three or four languages. In others the driver gives the tour and drives the boat. These tours are also in three or four languages. Many Dutch people are multi-lingual. Many speak Dutch. English, German, and French. This is out of necessity, not only for tourists, but the more important reason is the multinational corporations headquartered in the Netherlands and surrounding countries.

The next type of tour is the dinner, brunch, or night cocktail tours. These are available from most of the canal boat operators. Finally, is the hop on-hop off tour which give you 24 hours to just travel the canals getting on and off at all of the major stops.

There are also private tours offered by multiple organizations. Their literature is everywhere.

The best tour of all is a friend that really knows the city and owns a boat.

Canal boat: The Canals of Amsterdam
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Netherlands and the sea have a long tradition with each other, much of the country itself is land that has been reclaimed from the sea. What better way to experience many of Amsterdam's sights than by boat! The canals that make their way through the city provide and excellent means of transportation not just for getting from point A to point B, but for taking in much of the city's lovely ambiance and rich history. There are many companies that offer tours on the canals, but taking a water taxi can be just as fun, and cheaper as well!

    Canal boat: Amsterdam by boat
  • Tip Rating:
  • Canal tours are a great way to see the city even if you will be wearing a big sign on your forehead that says, "I'm a tourist!" After all, the canals are what make the city truly unique and magical. The most popular tour boats are docked at Damrak and Prins Hendrikkade near Centraal Station, on Rokin near Muntplein, and at Leidseplein. They last about and hour and cost 8 Euros for adults.

There are many tour operators, but I'll list one called Amsterdam Canal Tours. They can be reached at the number below.

    Canal boat: Touristy but fun!
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Canal Bus runs every 40 minutes or so from early till late, throughout the city.

Day passes cost you 16 euros and are valid until 12:00 the following day.

As mentioned before in other tips, this is really the favoured way to view this city of delights around every corner.

From the bridges to the buildings and fantastic architecture, to the intimate glimpse into other people's live as they go about their daily business.

With over 150 canals totaling over 100 kilometers in length, Amsterdam is an ideal city to explore by boat. The tours last about 90 minutes and take you around the city and the harbor. All the major attractions are described in Dutch, German, French and English. It’s a great way to be introduced to this great city.

There are several stops around the city, where one can hop on.

    About $10 per person.

Whether you are with a VTmeeting or just on your own taking a canalboat tour is a great way to see the best city in the world.

We did several canalboat tours, and they basically are the same so just look for the best price !

Most tours take one hour and they will take you through some major canals and over the IJ and Amstel.

    Canalboat trips are offered by:
    - rederij Lovers http://www.lovers.nl/
    - rederij Plas http://www.ibw.nl/plas/
    - canal bus http://www.canal.nl/
    - Meyer's Rondvaarten
    - Rederij P. Kooij
    - Holland International Canal Boats
    and more.....

Canal boat: No Problem Getting From Point A to Point B.
  • Tip Rating:
  • Canal cruises are a cheap way to see the city. You will learn some great facts that are not listed in your tour guide and when you're tired, it beats walking. We missed our 1st boat 'cause I was confused about the departure time, and thought we had time for a quick lunch. We made it back in time to take another boat with a group of Asian tourists. You have not truely toured Amsterdam until you go with an Asian tour guide and hear the descriptions of the sites in Mandarin. It was a hoot!

Transportation to and around Amsterdam is a piece of cake. Trams are the best method for getting around when you are tired of walking. The routes are simple to figure out. Maps for the tram service are easy to find.

Use trains to get from the airport to Centraal Station. All the signs include an English translation.

There are plenty of taxis everywhere, but we never found a need for them.

Bicycles are commonplace here but seemed a little too dangerous for us. You can rent a bike from several different places.

    Canal boat: Follow the canals
  • Tip Rating:
  • It doesnt have to be a specific tour eg. Museum tour or romantic night cruise. The ordinary cruises are possibly the best ones to go on. They cost less and are less rigid as to where they stop it seems.

It is a lovely past-time to sit on the boat, watching life go by you on the banks .. and the same for them too! haha It must be interesting to see all these tourists gawking at them from the boat! ;)

  • One of the most popular ways to get an impression of Amsterdam is taking DE RONDVAARTBOOT (tourist boat).
You find them at the South side of the Central Station, along the Damrak and Rokin.
