Eating and Drinking: Bring Home Some Siroopwafelen!!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Bring a box home and indulge! They sell them everywhere - but I didn't think about getting mine until I was in the airport coming home - I am glad I did! Each one has a soft layer of caramel sandwiched between two crispy textured waffle layers!! They were delicious, and the box of 10 didn't last long.

There are various brands to choose between. Mine were called "Gouda's Gilde". According to the blurb on the box, these syrup waffles are baked to a secret original recipe dating back to 1864 using the finest cream and butter!!

I guess they are a just a little fattening then!

Eating and Drinking: Tasty Hot Snacks at Febo's!

    Someone is enjoying a Febo!

Before I visited Amsterdam - I read on VT (of course!) about Febo's. Naturally I had to try something from this fast food snack place. For just 1 Euro I was pleasantly surprised with my instant hot snack - I can't remember the name of it - it looked like a typical Dutch croquette.

Self serve yourself from the coin operated mini windows - the food is replenished regularly and is served piping hot on a little paper plate - it fills a gap for a while - just what you expect for your money really!

By the way - I don't know the 'model' demonstrating the food in my pic - he just wouldn't move out of the way!!

    Eating and Drinking: Hagelslaag!
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is one of my favourite things about The Netherlands! Hagelslaag is chocolate sprinkles ( a bit like vermicelli) that you can eat for breakfast on bread. It comes in different flavours of chocolate, my favourite is plain. It's also great on toast, as it melts slightly. It's available on the breakfast section of major supermarkets like Albert Heijn, for around 1 euro 70 a box. I imagine that it is really intended for children, but 'big kids' shouldn't miss out either!

Eating and Drinking: Fries with mayo!
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is a typical dutch treat you HAVE to try. You can get them anywhere on the street. Top them with mayo AND onions.....tastes just like a Mickey D's burger, only no meat....swear.
I had them several times while I was there. It's a perfect cheap snack.
Anyplace is good..there's Frank and Fries, there's Moaz, and several other chains. All as good as the other.

Eating and Drinking: French frites with MAYONAISE!!!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Never outside the Netherlands have I met such a custom - in fast foods like FEBO and similar they serve french frites with the huge drop of mayonaise!! During my stay in Amsterdam I sort of got used to this but I remember the first impression!
Of course, you may have your frites with ketchup as well but you will find that mayonaise is much more popular.

Anyway, believe me, this is something you buy and in few minutes regret it - unless you are really REALLY hungry :-)

    Eating and Drinking: Croquettes
  • Tip Rating:
  • These are kind of like deep fried mashed potatoes and gravy. They're local fast food and where they aren't heaven on earth, they are a tasty snack and are typically Dutch. They shouldn't be much more than a euro. You find them in the same place you find local fast food, they look like breaded and fat cigars. You can get one in one of these places, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Eating and Drinking: Try the national drink: Jenever
  • Tip Rating:
  • Jenever (pronounced ye-nei-ver) is very famous and popular in Holland and Flemish speaking region of Belgium.

It has a taste that is similar to Gin, and so people often call it "Dutch gin" when explaining to tourists and foreigners. The drink distilled from malt wine and the taste comes from the 'juniper' berries that grows in Holland.

Is it a great-tasting spirit? well to be honest, no :p but it's the novelty that's important right? Every time I travel I always make sure I try the country's national spirits or drinks :)

There's many different distilleries that produce Jenever in the Netherlands. The famous ones include Bols, Bokma and Ketel One

Eating and Drinking: Poffertjes: Mini pancakes with a personality
  • Tip Rating:
  • You can find them in pancake places or in shoping mall cafes or in certain eetcafes.
They're not just mini pancakes - they're stylish and absolutely delicious small bites. The best time to have some poffertjes would be early in the afternoon, however they taste great at all times, even with your morning coffee.

Eating and Drinking: Eating is an experience, not a chore
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the first differences in customs was in eating out. Here eating is treated as an experience not as an another item on the 'to do list'.

It makes no difference if it's a little coffee shop (the kind that serves coffee) or a 4 star restaurant, you will most likely have to ask for the bill. Unlike our servers, who stop by to see if you want anything else, then lay the check on the table. Here, you are left alone to enjoy the experience, and it would appear that leaving the check on the table would be considered as rude.

Also the tipping rate is different, as a rule 10% appears to be the normal, however I haven't received any complaints at tipping American standard for good service (15-20%)

French fries (chips) are Fritters in Holland and Fritter sauce is not ketchup. No, it's this yummy mixture of mayonnaise and maybe relish and mustard?
Have you seen Pulp Fiction? John Travolta monologues this nicely : )
Anyhow, try it! It is very very tasty -- although quite unhealthy I can imagine, but what the heck you're on vacation/holiday!
