If you want to come by plane, depending where your “home airport” is and where you plan to stay, it might be a cheaper option to fly into Marco Polo and not into Treviso. Yes, I am serious about this ! Lufthansa seems to have decided to offer alternatives to Ryanair flights, and if you are flexible with days (what I was), you can get roundtrip tickets including taxes for 88 Euro from major German airports (mine was Frankfurt). As I planned to stay in Venezia anyhow (and not in Mestre or anywhere on the mainland), my costs to get there from my flat at home were 6 Euro (bus to Frankfurt airport) + 44 Euro (= half of the plane ticket) + 6 Euro (Alilaguna) = 56 Euro including taxes and all. Consider this, if you think about how much finally a Ryanair ticket (or any other cheap airline one) will be, adding the transport costs to the respective Ryanair airport and the costs of getting from Treviso airport (40 kms north of Marco Polo) into Venezia. Maybe by now, also other major airlines follow Lufthansa's calculations. Plus – leaving from Marco Polo airport, which is located directly at the northern part of the lagoon (if you look closely, you can see the airport in photo 3), will give you the benefit of a first class view of the lagoon. I even thought that our captain must have done this lap of honour just for us passengers ! There was no reason why we could not have head north after take off, but he flew a circle over the lagoon so give us these fantastic views. It was quite late, so the photos did not turn out better. Make sure, you book a seat in the right part of the plane (seats D-F). Leave a Comment

In May 2005 I left Italy by plane from the Venice Airport Marco Polo, which is located about 12 km east of the city centre. The Airport is very modern and consists of 2 terminals. It can be reached by both local buses, Express Fly buses, waterboats and taxis. For more details about how to get to the Airport, please read my "To Venice Airport by public transportation" tip. Venice Marco Polo airport is located at Tessera, some 8km north of Venice on the edge of the lagoon. Its the main airport for scheduled flights and also the budget airline Go (now part of Easyjet). NEW from summer 2005 Jet 2 (another budget airline) will fly from Manchester as well as Leeds Bradford to Venice Marco Polo. From here its a 20 min coach jouney (co-incides with flights) - Venice Express is a new bus service from Venice airport to Piazzale Roma. It is a direct, non-stop coach style bus that runs every 20 minutes. Look for a large blue bus outside the Arrivals area, under the Venice Express sign and digital clock. Alternatively take a water bus for the scenic way to arrive in Venice proper (airport ferries approx 10 euro and private water taxis horrendously expensive comparitively - check before you board). The airport website gives lots of useful info regarding flight arrivals and departures etc..

For most North Americans, flying to Italy means booking a ticket to Milan or Rome. But Venice's Marco Polo International Airport (VCE) at Tessera, on the mainland just north of Venice, is a more convenient gateway for many travelers. We took a flight from Venice to London and greatly enjoyed it. The aerial view of Venice was breathtaking. You'll see the beautiful city, with instantly recognizable landmarks like the Grand Canal and the Campanile San Marco. You'll see the Venetian Lagoon, the Dolomites and of course the Adriatic Sea. It is a 20-minute road trip from the city's Piazzale Roma. Two different bus routes are available, and both are inexpensive. Bus ATVO (blue bus) is a direct connection from the airport to Piazzale Roma that takes about 20 minutes; buses leave every half an hour. The ticket costs €4 and includes luggage. Bus ACTV No. 5 (orange bus) is a public transport bus and therefore makes several stops before reaching Piazzale Roma (it takes approximately 45min). The bus runs frequently between 4:05 a.m. and 12:10 a.m. The ticket is quite cheap - it costs around €1, but does not include luggage transport. You have to purchase an extra ticket for each suitcase you're carrying on the bus (the same price as for passengers). If you aren't carrying a lot of luggage and aren't traveling at rush hour, this public bus is a good way to reach the city. You can also ride the boat from the airport to the Piazza San Marco for 10 € - and you'll get a sightseer's view of the Venetian lagoon during the 40-minute ride. Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane

We flew Ryanair from Brussels South (Charleroi) to Venice Treviso. Very convenient and cheap! Ryanair In Treviso a special shuttle (Eurobus service) takes you to either Venice Island (Pizzale Roma) or to Mestre. On the day of your return you take the shuttle back to the airport. Price for a return ticket is 8 euro (ticket is valid 1 week). Buy your ticket at the change office in the airport. The service is in connection with the arrivals and departures of Ryanair flights. I have visited Venice several times now, the first few times arriving by train from another Italian city. More recently I have flown direct from London Gatwick to Marco Polo, Venice's main airport. I have travelled with Easyjet, and the flight takes around 2 hours. Marco Polo is around 20-30 minutes drive from the centre of Venice. There is a shuttle bus that departs from the front of the terminal, or if you prefer to arrive in style, walk down to the dock and catch one of the public ferries, or even better, a water taxi. Some budget airlines fly into Treviso airport, which is actually located about a 1 hour drive from the centre of Venice. You can catch a shuttle bus from here, which coincides with flight arrivals. I arrived to Venice by plane. Marco Polo is a little airport well communicated with the city. Just get out the airport and you will find the bus stop. Ask if it goes to the central bus stop and if it does get in. You can also get a ship but it takes long time. http://www.veniceairport.com/aeroporto.jhtml?lan=it Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane

I travelled by Easyjet from East Midlands Airport to Marco Polo airport, Venice. I'd particularly wanted to arrive here rather than Treviso as I'd been told about the Vaporetta journey from the airport to San Marco. It sounded so romantic arriving in Venice on Christmas Eve by boat (even if it was just me on my own) www.easyjet.com or www.skyscanner.com for flight details, prices etc. I was lucky to get a bargain 24th to 27th December 06, return flight for just over £70. The flight times are quite good -depart EMA at 13.10, arriving MPA at 16.25. Depart MPA 16.55 arriving EMA 18.15 As I had only Hand luggage, I was soon on my way to the Alilaguna waterbus stop for my journey to San Marco. Luggage trolleys (50cent, 1 or 2 euro piece is needed to release the trolley, remember to retrieve this when you reach the Vaporetta) Marco Polo is a pleasant airport with plenty of shops, cafes, restaurants etc. Exchange bureau, ATM's, car hire, hotel booking etc. The walk to the buses, water buses, water taxis etc is well sign posted, it takes about 7 minutes to walk. Taxis stop outside the airport exit. Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane

RyanaAir - low travel Budget to more and more different areas in Europe. Budget travelling airline - leaving from BXL South - recently also Ostend to smaller airports in Europe. Comfort is low - planes fully booked most of the time - correct respecting flight schedule - safety on board well highlighted. Our flight to Italy was from Bruxelles South to Treviso Airport (30 km from Venice) - took about 1hr20min and was correct ! Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane
