 | Rome Airports from/to Rome Reviews | Tips 1 - 10 of 117 | | On our last trip to Rome we flew into Fiumicino Airport and decided that the easiest way to get into town was by train. You can catch the train from the terminal, direct non-stop to Rome Termini Station. The train goes every half an hour and takes around 30 mins. It cost us about 8 euros oneway. Just remember to validate your ticket in the yellow machine on the platform before boarding your train. We found it an easy and stress free way to get into town. Leave a Comment

If you are flying to Rome from within Europe, you probably use Ryan Air or Easy Jet and arrive at Ciampino, an airport in the suburb of Rome. There are a few options to get to Rome from Ciampino airport: 1. Cotral. The Cotral bus takes you from Ciampino airport to Ciampino train station. From Ciampino train station, you’ll take the local train to Termini. Some Cotral routes also take you to Anagnina. This is the end of the Linea A, where you should take the metro toward Ottaviano and get off at Termini. This is the cheapest way (total cost: €2) but also takes the longest time. Tickets can be purchased at newspaper stand and from the machine. 2. Schiaffini. The Schiaffini bus is large and comfortable. It’s more like a shuttle than a bus and the ride from the airport to Anagnina metro station takes about 10 minutes. The fare is €1, and each large piece of luggage costs €1 extra. What constitutes a large piece of luggage? Our half-filled 18" roll-on was not large in the eyes of the conductor/ticket seller. 3. Terravision. The Terravision shuttle offers a 40-minute ride directly from Ciampino to Termini. The shuttle drops you in front of Hotel Royal Santini, a few steps from Termini. The nice thing about Terravision is that it's timed to leave approximately 30 minutes after each Ryan Air and Easy Jet arrival; this makes it the most convenient as well as the swiftest form of travel. It’s also the most expensive, at €10. Personally, I never think about transportation beforehand. I usually wait until I’ve collected my luggage. Then, I walk out the door to see what bus is waiting outside and decide at that point. Leave a Comment

Leonardo Express is the direct train between Leonardo da Vinci (or Fiumicino) airport and Roma Termini. There are no mid-way stops on this route. If you need to get off at Trastevere, Ostiense, Tuscolana or Tiburtina, make sure to board the FR1 or FM1 train to Fara Sabina instead. The main characteristic of the Leonardo Express is the frequency: there are two trains every hour in each direction. It’s a thirty-one minute run to cover the 37 km distance. Airport-bound trains depart at 22 and 52 minutes after the hour, while Termini-bound trains depart at 07 and 37 minutes after the hour. The first train leaves Termini at 5:52; the last at 22:52. The first train leaves Fiumicino at 6:37; the last at 23:37. Ticket for an adult or a child over 12 years old is € 11. For frequent customers, a carnet of 10 tickets is available for € 85 (a savings of € 25). This could also be a good option for group travellers. Besides ticket windows at all train stations, you can purchase tickets for the Leonardo Express online, from newspapers/tobacco stands (edicola/tabacchi) at the airport and in Termini, from all Trenitalia automatic ticket machines, from qualified travel agencies where the Trenitalia logo is displayed on the window, and at all major national airports. Don’t forget to validate your tickets from the yellow machine on the binario before boarding. Leave a Comment

From Fiumicino, if you need to go directly to Trastevere, Ostiense, or Tiburtina, the train that takes you there is FR1(also called FM1) , the metropolitan line toward Fara Sabina. The train on this line leaves every 15 minutes for each direction and the ticket costs € 5. The first train departs Tiburtina at 5:06, the last at 22:36. The first train departs Fiumicino at 5:57, the last at 23:27. Leave a Comment

Updated April 08 Take the Leonardo Express for a quick ride into Rome. It stops at Roma Termini, the main train station in Rome and cloest to the historical center. A ticket costs 11E, the trains usually leave from Track 2 at the airport., and they usually arrive at Track 24 in Rome, which is a good thing, as 24 is much closer to the exit than the old Track 26. Saves about 10 minutes of walking. The train is easy and there's no chance of getting caught in Rome's infamous traffic. Follow signs in the airport to the station (Stazione), find the small vending machines, select the direct train to Roma Termini, insert your credit card, and 5 seconds later, you've bought your 11 euro ticket to Rome. Don't forget to time-stamp your ticket in the yellow machines on the platform. The Leonardo Express usually leaves at :05 and :35 after the hour and takes 31 minutes. There's only one stop - Roma Termini. Keep a watch on your luggage and belongings. Departure announcements are made in English. If you have time, walk to the last car as it will be the closest to the entrance when you arrive in Rome. There's a "left luggage" service at Termini near Track (Binario) 24. If your hotel is too far to walk to, grab a taxi from the official line under the covered sidewalk in front of the main entrance. DO NOT accept a ride from anyone who comes up to you and offers you a taxi. RETURN TRAINS: They leave for the airport at :22 and :52 after the hour. For an up-to-date schedule, check out the website below. Enter "Fiumicino Airport" and "Roma Termini." Look for the trains with a "D" for direct. If you're looking for the CHEAPEST way to get into town, try the regional train (Ferrovia Metropolitana 1 or FM1) to Tiburtina Station (5.5 E), and from Tiburtina, take the Metro to Termini (1 E). Tiburtina is 5 k's east of the historical center. Other stops fairly near the historical center include Trastevere and Ostiense/Piramide. Leave a Comment

Not bad for a small airport. The problem however is still with the public transport links with Rome. I avoided paying the Terravison coach shuttle fare of EURO14 by using the local transport system. If you want to do likewise then here's how to do it, but bear in mind the caveats. As you come out of arrivals turn LEFT, exit the terminal doors and there is a bus stop straight in front of you (with a coach or bus probably waiting). This will either be a COTRAL or SCHIAFFANI bus/coach. The fare is EURO1 and you need to be heading for ANAGNINA METRO Station (which will be on the LED display on the front of the bus). In off-peak hours allow 30 minutes for this bus journey, in peak hours allow 55 minutes. When you get to ANAGNINA station go down the steps into the subway following the red'M' signs, just as you emerge into an open square (there's an old blue tram on display in the middle of it) look to your left and you'll see a tobacconist's booth where you can buy your Bigliette (ticket)..you can either get a single journey ticket for EURO1 or an all-day ticket for EURO4 (which you can use on METRO or COTRAL buses all day but NOT the SCHIAFFINI coach, so save 1 euro for your journey back!). Once you have your ticket turn to the left and follow the red 'M' signs for the metro trains. COMING BACK to Ciampino Airport head back for Anagnina Metro Station. Once out of the metro exit note that the departure platform for the buses back to the airport are over the other side of the metro station to the one you arrived at. So this time walk past the blue antique tram following the signs for COTRAL/SHIAFFINI PARTENEZ (departures) and go up platform 1 on your right. I had to wait 20 minutes, so factor in that sort of wait for the bus. The LED on the front will say CIAMPINO AIRPORT (again it is EURO1) and it will drop you off where you caught it when you arrived. Total Journey time you should allow for to Rome Termini Metro Station (including waiting) should be about 1hr 10 minutes. In peak hours this can go up to 2hrs. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

Effective October 1, 2006, the City of Rome has set fixed fees for taxis going between inside the Aurelian Walls (i.e., the city center) and the city's two airports: Fiumicino and Ciampino (i.e., in both directions). The fixed fee is 40 euro to/from Fiumicino and 30 euro to/from Ciampino. This fee covers up to four passengers and includes the luggage fee. If you had previously seen this tip, note that previous URL is no longer valid. The new URL of the press release about these fixed fares is at press release. Note that the map of the area within the Aurelian Walls can now be found at Aurelian Walls Boundary. Leave a Comment

If you arrive at Fiumicino Airport (which most international flights do), then you will need to hop on the Fiumicino Express train, unless you want to pay about 60 Euro for a cab. It is a direct train to Roma Termini. It takes about 30 minutes to arrive, and it stops at a few stations along the way. It costs 9.50 Euro, one way. From Termini to the Airport: The “Leonardo Express” leaves every 30 minutes, from 05.52 to 22.52. From the Airport to Termini The “Leonardo Express” leaves from the Fiumicino Airport every 30 minutes, from 06.37 to 23.37. Leave a Comment Theme: Train

When we were staying in Gaeta, Italy, for two months, Allan's sister Jayne came to visit us for about ten days, and she flew from Chicago to Rome. We drove from Gaeta to Rome's (Fiumicino) Leonardo Da Vinci Airport. It and Milan's Malpensa are Italy's two most important hubs of transportation for "long haul" flights. We had it all planned to meet her at the gate, and I was to take the photo. The airport is about 18 miles from Rome's center, and if you had to take a taxi, it would cost about $35-40 and would take around 40 minutes. The big moment came, her plane was announced, and we stood waiting. As she came out, looking around helplessly, Allan ran up and kissed her on the cheek...I snapped the picture and was able to capture all the emotion. A note of warning: Don't be alarmed if you see military people armed in the airport. It is part of the security there. The first time that I saw it, I was somewhat frightened. For all of you travelling to Rome by air, getting to and from Fiumicino airport (also known as the Leonardo Da Vinci Airport) is simple. There is a train that travels direct (without stopping) to Termini Station, which is the connecting point for most trains, but also for both the Metro Lines - Line A and Line B. If you are going from the centre out to the airport, you will find Termini on any Metro map.....it is very easy to find. We used a taxi to get from the airport into rome, but used the train on the way home. It did seem a little expensive, but when you consider your other options i.e. Taxi, Bike or walk, i guess it's not to bad really. A one way ticket from Termini to Fiumicino cost 9 Euros and 50 Cents each, a total of 19 Euros. The trains are comfy enough, and the plus point is that you get to see the outskirts of Rome, which you might not otherwise have seen. Leave a Comment Theme: Train
