Ryanair is a gift from heaven.
Whatever people say about it , it is safe ,
easy , fast and cheap.
The staf is friendly and efficient...
I know about the snobs... bla bla this , bla bla that.
It is a choise. I like to spend my money on
a fine restaurant instead of....
And no I don't miss the miraculous white
sandwich that doesn't crumbles.
When we arrived there was even a men with
a little yellow car waiting for us and waving
orange flags. Not the best performance I've
ever seen , but the intention was nice. ;-)

In my experience there are always good
connections between the city you are visiting
and the 'alternative' - smaller airport.
For Rome-ciampino you got a few options.
A bus brings you to Termini - 8 euro , and
you can get a return ticket as well for 12 euro.
We chose the 8 euro option.
By public transport you can get a bus to
metro-station Anagnina and get on the A-line.
We chose that option to get back. Cheaper
but it takes a little more time.

This is a note I posted on a forum on handicap access from Leonardo da Vinci to Civitavecchia:
First, how to get from the airport (Leonardo da Vinci, or "Fiumicino" as the locals call it (from the town that it is in)) to Civitavecchia:
1. At the airport itself, take the train to Stazione Termini (Rome's main train station)
2. At Stazione Termini, take one of many trains to Civitavecchia (about an hour ride, I think).
3. At Civitavecchia, take a taxi to the port - actually, I am told that the distance is not far, but for anyone travelling with luggage, much less a handicap, why not take a cab?

For the airport, look at http://www.adr.it/content.asp?L=3&IdMen=630 . At the bottom of the page is a link for "special assistance" and lists locations of lounges for special needs. One of them is at the train station in the airport. Note that I recently emailed a question to the redazione@adr.it (editorial staff for the website), and I got an answer within a day(!!!), so you might try, too.
For the Italian train system, I have found two pages, but, unfortunately (perhaps), they are only in Italian. The page for wheelchair-bound people is http://62.110.170.238/disabili/viSed.html, while a list of offices to contact is at http://62.110.170.238/disabili/hodi.html . In any case, it is clear that some trains, at least, are able to handle wheelchair bound passengers, and major stations can use lifts to load the passengers. Your travel agent should be able to use this information to get more specifics.

Last winter we have been flying five times from Brussels to Rome and return with Brussels Airlines. On one flight we left late (45 minutes) from Brussels. On another one from Rome we left 20 minutes late. All other flights were on time.
Brussels Airlines is the regular Belgian company. It is NOT a low cost low service company but Brussels Airlines has competitive, all inclusive, prices when booking a few weeks in advance.
With the b.light economy rate one is allowed to take a 20 kg registered luggage (with no extra cost) and 8 kg hand luggage (1 piece).
For Europe the planes are B 737, Airbus A 319 or AVRO RJ85 – AVRO RJ100. All these planes have seats with sufficient space for the legs.
Drinks and food can be bought on the European flights with the b.light economy rate.
Brussels Airlines joins Brussels National to Rome Fiumicino.
I read here a quite enthusiast comment from 2004 on Ryan Air.
Since then travellers have been able to compare the overall and final net prices, the comfort and service between the two companies. Furthermore Brussels National is an all weather airport while Charleroi at 40 km from Brussels, from where Ryan Air operates is closed when there is mist.

When we were staying in Gaeta, Italy, for two months, Allan's sister Jayne came to visit us for about ten days, and she flew from Chicago to Rome. We drove from Gaeta to Rome's (Fiumicino) Leonardo Da Vinci Airport. It and Milan's Malpensa are Italy's two most important hubs of transportation for "long haul" flights.
We had it all planned to meet her at the gate, and I was to take the photo. The airport is about 18 miles from Rome's center, and if you had to take a taxi, it would cost about $35-40 and would take around 40 minutes.
The big moment came, her plane was announced, and we stood waiting. As she came out, looking around helplessly, Allan ran up and kissed her on the cheek...I snapped the picture and was able to capture all the emotion.

Leonardo da Vinci (IATA code FCO) is the largest airport in Italy; it is located 32 km away from the centre of Rome and it's easily reacheable by :
* car (through the Rome-Fiumicino motorway)
* train
- Leonardo Express train (direct links from/to Termini station)
- metropolitan train FM1
* bus : Terravision Shuttle, Schiaffini Travel Shuttle, COTRAL (including night service).

It was the first time I booked a flight with Ryanair. It was supposed to leave at 10.10am on a cold and snowy Tuesday morning. After waiting an hour. It was announced that the flight is cancelled due to some technical problems. The next one was at 7.50pm. So we changed the reservation on the evening plan as well as the flight back. The worst was that we had to kill many many hours on a small airport (Hahn, for me just in the middle of nowhere) where there is nothing to do .... Leave a Comment

Located about 30 minutes away from the city center, Fiumicino is the major international airport hub of Rome. Basically, you can get anywhere and come from anywhere when traveling from or to this airport.
FCO was only built in 1961. Up until that point Ciampino, the other and still functioning airport of Rome, was the city's principal airport. Now, Ciampino has been relagated to mainly domestic and a few international flights. Leave a Comment

We flew BA into Fiumicino Airport or Leonardo da Vinci Airport to give it its other name. Its a great modern clean airport - the floor shines with reflections! - one of the best i have been in. Easy connections are available into the centre of Rome by a linked railway. Theme: Airplane

If you have read the intro you will understand we were not amused. When we turned up at the airport to go back home there was a strike going on. All Alitalia flights were cancelled untill 6. Our flight at 5 was the last flight to Amsterdam, so no way to get home and to work the next day. This costed us a vacationday, a hotelroom for one night and an extra trip to the airport (2x 19 Euro).
Italy is famous for its strikes. This was our second italian city, and the second time we were effected by a strike........
Alitalia is a nice airline to fly with though. Just don't fly when we do ;-))) Leave a Comment
