Friends Wine Bar: Vino Rosso Corposo!!
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are a couple of Enoteca's in Rome called "Friend's Wine Bar". This one draws the best crowd. The picture is of the pedestrian bridge accross the Tiber river to Trastevere. "Friend's" is right at the end of the bridge on the tiny Piazza. Trastevere is the old residential part of Rome now occupied by artists, lofts, and a good number of foreigners who can afford the astronomical rent. This is Rome's "Left Bank" and even if you are only in the city for a day.. a stroll down these streets is required.

No need to dress up for this place.

But I'm assuming you are not wearing ripped jeans, sneakers, and a Green Bay Packers jacket. No, of course not. You know better.. I mean you ARE in Italy.

    Alien: Party with italians
  • Tip Rating:
  • The first month, when I lived in Rome, I just went to the typical tourist spots like "Naughts head" and Alpheus. Then one day, I took a flyer, and we decided to go to the disco, and it was Alien. It's situated in Trieste, not too easy to find!!

But it's a very nice club, with 99% italians (and 1% foreigners, wich is us =). They have a couple of dansfloors, and the music is dance, trance and house music. It's a pretty trendy place, and you'll met trannies and trendy romans.

While I was working during the weekend, we always went there during the week. It was crowded anyway, but the guys were not so persistent and desperate! An advise is to call the guy at the flyers (you'll find one at the Corso!) and try to get at the guest list!

    Centro Sociale: Fun in Rome
  • Tip Rating:
  • I have put off writing this tip because I don't want everyone and her mother knowing about them.
I was looking for fun in Rome. And I could not find fun. I found Tourist Traps aplenty but where were the cool people having their fun?
Then an amico of an amico took me to a Centro Sociale in Monti.
No way would I have ever found it. A few lights around a dim doorway. Then up four flights of stairs and across a echoing foyer (this place had been a school) and there - in the courtyard -all the cool people having fun.
Cheap bar and eats run by students. Plays in the chapel, art exhibitions, bands. Nights of homage to the book - when students came to your table and quoted chunks of Moby Dick in Italian (like Fahrenheit 451 - I quoted back my favourite Shakespearian sonnet) and lectures by disaffected members of the Red Brigade. Alas in Italian. Could understand not a word.
However - most of the people who go to Centros will have some English and will probably be chatty.
Alas, I think this place closed down just before I left Rome - but they would have regrouped somewhere else.
They are like squats. Semi official I believe. The buildings don't get trashed because they are occupied.
Do be a little careful. Apparently some Centros are hotbeds of Skinheads or worse.

But you know they are really cool places. Cheap as chips. Never know what is going down. But you will probably need a local to tell you where they are.

Ask a local where they are. Make sure the local is not a Skinhead. Or worse.

On The Rox: For a drink or three in Testaccio
  • Tip Rating:
  • This pub, owned by two funny Danish brothers and managed by people of all sorts of nationality, is one of the brightest stars of the Testaccio nightlife.

Never too quiet, and never too crowded (except for a few Saturdays), it retains a laid-back atmosphere that makes it very easy to meet new people. It also has a good mix of Italians and foreigners, and a bunch of regulars that you'll find almost every night in there.

In the summer it has a very pleasant terrace, where you can get served at the table for an extra fee.

The quick and polite barmen will prepare you cocktails of all sorts from the almost endless list of hard booze. They also have a few decent wine bottles and four beers by the draught, including the excellent Peroni Gran Riserva, an Italian double malt lager.

They can also make you hot dogs or sandwiches, though some of Rome's best restaurants (including the adjacent Da Pecorino - see my tip) are only metres away.

Overall, a very nice place. The only bad mark goes to the toilets, which regularly lack soap and leave a lot to be desired as per cleanliness.

    Take it easy.

You'll find every nationality on Baja on Wednesday nights...

The Drunken Ship: It will happen at the Ship!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Good for drinking and all American! Bartenders are (nearly) all either British or American (exception: the manager), so you'll get along here quite well. Mostly filled with English-speaking people, so if you can't see the Italians anymore, you can come here. The bartenders are always in a good mood and try giving everybody a good time (try a body shot!!!).

No dress code, sometimes there are Hawaiian Nights were you are allowed to come in nothing or a coconut bikini! ;-)

The Vineria is a outdoor winebar on the Campo de' Fiori. If you're more into having a glass of good Italian wine that partying with Americans and hard shots on the rocks, then this is the perfect place to go.
People who go here are basicly adults or the jeunesse dor?e.

Well, a little less skin, a little more Armani and you're fine!

A few local bars and clubs: Romeing Tours
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you want to do an awesome pub-crawl, take the Romeing Tours night tour of Rome. It is a 45 minute night tour of the Spanish Steps, Trevi fountain, and some other places I don't remember right now. Anyways, it ends up with a pub-crawl for which they sell drink tokens for like 3 euro each(trust me that's cheap). And, they tour guides are hot American boys. A must, if you want to meet new people and get wasted.

    Whatever you feel like wearing.

    Nighttime photographing: Free nightlife spot
  • Tip Rating:
  • We didn't really go to any nightlife spot in Rome, since we wanted to see all of Rome's antiquities etc. However a very good tip is to walk with your camera (and tripod) around the city and make wonderful night photo's of the citiy. Almost all the Ancient sights and other famous must sees are well lit and easy to photograph. We didn't do too much night sight seeing, but I did capture this shot of the Colosseum at night. Magnificients isn't it? I'm quite proud of this pic, which I took with my new digital camera!!
