In ancient Roman times forum (square) was one of the most important part in the town, no matter if Rome, Aquileaia, Pompei or other towns established by the Romans. It was huge open space and all roads or city streets led directly to the forum. Forum was the place where people came to see and to be seen, to exchange the news, ghossips, to trade or doing all other things we still do when coming to our city squares.
Piazza Navona isn't maybe the most beautiful square in the Rome but it is one of the most popular and people get here very gladly, no matter if locals or tourists. It is the square which, in some way, connects ancient Rome and Vatican, you cannot miss it when strolling around. Leave a Comment

Even though it was raining, people still come out in their hoardes, onto the streets and into the piazzas. They still sit on the same bench and feed the same birds, the only difference being, that this time they have their raincoat with them! I find this quite fascinating... they watch the people and the people watch them. A lovely bit of Italian culture. Almost saying 'stop rushing aorund and take in your surroundings!'. Lovely. The stand out feature of Piazza Navona is the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of the Four Rivers - Danube, Ganges, Nile and Plate), which was created by Bernini. There are also two smaller fountains in the piazza as well, the Fontana del Moro and Fontana di Nettuno. The main style of this piazza seems to be Baroque, and I read somewhere that some of the buildings in the area date back to the 17th Century. When I was there in the summer there were many artists selling their pictures, drawing portraits of people, there were also street entertainers, it was a very nice place to hang out. Also in the nearby area there are quite a few shops, cafes and restaurants. Leave a Comment

The 4 rivers fountain is built around the obelisk - four white marble statues, five metres tall which represent the rivers. The first was by Claude Poussin and was dedicated to the Ganges, symbolising Asia; the Nile, representing Africa, was carved by Giacomo Antonio Fancelli, its veiled head standing for the up till then unknown source of the river, the Danube for Europe, carved by Antonio Raggi and finally the Rio de la Plata, representing America by Francesco Baratta.

This fountain, erected in 1574 during the reign of Pope Gregory XIII Boncompagni, was completely restored in 1653 by Bernini. During the restoration of 1874 the four Tritons and the four masks were substituted with copies by Luigi Amici. The central sculpture, designed by Bernini and carved by Giannantonio Mari in 1655, is mistakenly called "The Moor" due to its characteristic facial features but is really a muscular Triton who is riding a dolphin.

I loved the fountains in the piazza. This fountain, in the northern part of the square, was restored by Bernini but remained for three hundred years without statues and decoration. In 1873 Antonio Della Bitta won the competition to carve the statue of Neptune, whilst Gregorio Zappalą carved the group aroun the basin: sea-horses, mermaids and putti playing with the dolphins. Work was completed in 1878.

Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of the Four Rivers)
Located her in Piazza Navona is the famous Fountain of the Four Rivers by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The rivers represented in the fountain are the Danube, the Ganges, the Nile and the Rio de la Plata. They are arranged on a steep rocky reef from which a Roman obelisk taken from the Cirucus of Maxentius rises up into the air. Rumor has it that sculptures on the fountain symbolize the rivalry between Bernini and Borromini. Innocent the X first commissioned Borromini, but Bernini obtained the comminssion by corrupting Donna Olimpia, the Pope's sister-in-law. Leave a Comment

Fontana del Moro (Fountain of the Moor) located here at Piazza Navona. Located at the southern end of Piazza Navona you will find Fontana del Moro, designed by Giacomo della Porto. It is said that Bernini built the central figure, a Triton riding a dolphin and which resembles a "moor". There are four statues in all located in the fountain.
There are three distinct fountains found here at Piazza Navona, The Fountain of Four Rivers, Fountain of the Moors and the Fountain of Neptune. Leave a Comment

Piazza Navona, which was a five minute walk from our hotel is usually a hub of activity, except in the early morning (see photo). Evening is the most fun. All the restaurants are busy, mimes and street performers are abundant, magicians and musicians are entertaining the crowds, and artists are displaying their works. Tre Scalini, one of Rome's most reknown restaurants is located on Piazza Navona. It was highly recommended by my good VT friend, pchamlis, but unforunately, we did not have enough evenings to eat there. I hear it is very good. If pchamlis says it is good, it must be good.
