 | Görlitz Things To Do | Tips 1 - 10 of 115 | | Popular Things To Do | Other Things To Do Tips | All Tips (115) Although there are still 16 Holy Sepulchres more in Germany the one in Görlitz is very special and unique. It is considered to be the only one exact copy of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem as it existed until the 16th century before it was severely damaged by a fire. The area consists of four parts: Holy Cross chapel (see picture), the small salvation house, Holy Sepulchre chapel and way of the cross. It was built 1481 - 1504 as a donation of mayor Georg Emmerich, who went on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem 1464. The Holy Sepulchre in Görlitz has quickly become an important pilgrimage place. In spite of reformation it could preserve the tradition. The Holy Cross chapel is a double chapel: the lower floor chapel (Adam chapel) was built with a crack in the wall (hint on the earthquake during the execution of Jesus Christ) which is connected to the upper floor chapel (Golgatha chapel) where three holes on the floor symbolise the location of the crosses. Beautiful gothic architecture. In the small salvation house you can see a group of sculptures depicting Maria Magdalena salving Jesus, a work of Hans v. Olmützer (1500). The Holy Sepulchre chapel is an exact smaller (scale ?)copy of the one in Jerusalem as it existed 1099 - 1555. Oriental - Romanesque style. The way of the cross (via Dolorosa) begins at the Western portal of St. Peter and Paul church and leads to the Holy Cross chapel. Two small shrines are preserved, impressive the one at the corner Nikolaigraben/Bogstrasse symbolising the place where Simon of Cyrene took over the cross from Jesus. When you're standing in front of the Holy Cross chapel you can see a park in the north. It symbolises the Kidron valley and the adjoining Mount of Olives. Leave a Comment

Since Görlitz has always been a part of Silesia (in spite of country's boundaries!) it is the logical home of the Silesian museum. From 2 Oct 2005 on (after finishing reconstruction) a permanent exhibit will be on display in the "Schönhof" townhouse, Brüderstrasse 8 (corner Untermarkt). Until then you are limited to see temporary exhibits in the neighbouring house "Goldener Baum", currently pre-WWII works of artists from the Wroclaw art school. Well worth a visit, and beside the displayed pieces the architecture of the townhouse is amazing. opening hours: Tue - Sun 10 - 17 h admission fee: 1 Euro Leave a Comment

With its commanding location, the Peterskirche is an impressive amalgam of its illustrious past incarnations. Steeped in the city’s medieval origins, the former Late Romanesque basilica of approximately 1230 gave way to this Late Gothic successor built between 1423 and 1497. Its neo-Gothic towers were built in the late 1800s and can be seen from just about anywhere in the city. Though an admittedly impressive sight in its own right, its riverside hilltop location is what makes it truly stand out. It is best viewed from across the Neisse in Poland or just at the border entrance. Leave a Comment Address: An der PeterskircheDirections: Scenically situated on the hill above the Neisse river, north of the Untermarkt.

For me, this was even more impressive than the Peterskirche perhaps due to it being in a less restored state. It was like stepping back in time once you entered the former monastery church of the Franziskaner monks that was founded in 1234. The church itself was built between 1371 and 1381 and 0f particular note is the splendidly carved pulpit and alter dating back to 1516. Leave a Comment Address: ObermarktDirections: At the east end of the Obermarkt, right in the Old Town center.

The Reichenbach tower dates back to 1376. It was connected to the Kaisertrutz until 1848 by two walls. On the tower walls you can see in the upper row six flags. These are the countries Goerlitz belonged to over the time. Leave a Comment Address: DemianiplatzDirections: between Gruener Graben and Obermarkt - opposite the Kaisertrutz

This Jugendstil department store was built in 1912/13 after the plans of Potsdam architect Carl Schmanns. Today, the Hertie department store has taken over from Karstadt. On the ground floor you find a section with travel books of the local area and postcards. There is a pay toilet on an upper floor which is cleaned after each use. Leave a Comment Address: Marienplatz

The Dicker Turm (Thick Tower) dates back to 1305 and stands like a sentry to the Old City center as well as the focal point of the Marienplatz. The town coat of arms is carved in sandstone and was added in 1477. Leave a Comment Address: on SteinstrasseDirections: At the north end of the Marienplatz in the Old City center.

Locally born artist, Bartholomäus Scultetus, built the two faced Astronomical Clock that adorns the Northeast face of the Rathaus’ tower in 1584. The lower and exquisite clock shows the local time while the upper equally impressive clock gives both a 24 hour clock and information about the phases of the moon. Leave a Comment Directions: Look up, it's a bird, it's a plane, no it's an Astronomical Clock.

The Flüsterbogen or “Whispering Arch” is a Late Gothic doorway at house No. 22 of the Undermarkt that all tourists make a spectacle (including us) by whispering (in our case as newlyweds) sweet nothings into one end and waiting for them to come out the other. Hey, it works and it was fun. But yes, we are newlyweds. ;> Leave a Comment Address: Untermarkt 22Directions: Just look for tourist standing on an arch door way, you can't miss it!

The Biblisches Haus was built in 1570 after the 1526 fire destroyed all of the original Neissestrasse as well as part of the Untermarkt. Its name comes from the ornate biblical reliefs carved into the sandstone depicting both New and Old Testament scenes. Leave a Comment Address: Neissestrasse 29Directions: Neissestrasse runs from the river to the Untermarkt.
