Vienna Card & day tickets: Public Transport
  • Tip Rating:
  • Vienna has a comprehensive and unified public transport network that is one of the most efficient in Europe, Flat-fare tickets are valid for trains, trams, buses, the underground (U-Bahn) and the S-Bahn regional trains.
Services are frequent, and you will rarely have to wait more than five or 10 minutes.
Public transport kicks off around 5am or 6am. Buses and trams finish between 11pm and midnight, and S-Bahn and U-Bahn services between 12.30am and 1am.
Twenty-one Nightline bus routes crisscross the city from 12.30 am to 5am.
Schwedenplatz, Schottentor, and the Oper are starting points for many services; look for buses and bus stops marked with an "N". All tickets are valid for Nightline services.
Transport maps are posted in all U-Bahn stations and at many bus and tram stops.
Free maps and information pamphlets are available from Wiener Linien, located in 25 U-Bahn stations.
The Karlsplatz, Stephansplatz, and Westbahnhof information offices are open from 6.30am to 6.30pm Monday to Friday and 8.30am to 4pm Saturday and Sunday.
Those at Florisdorf, Spittelau, Praterstern, Philadelphiabrücke, Landstrasse, and Volkstheater are closed on weekends.

Vienna Card & day tickets: The Vienna Card
  • Tip Rating:
  • As with most other European cities I visited, Vienna has a transportation card for tourists that allows for unlimited transport with entry discounts to most major attractions. For 16.90 Euro, you can travel for 72 hours on the city's U-Bahn, S-Bahn, bus, tram routes. There are disccounts at museums, theaters, concerts, restaurants and cafes. The card is available from most hotels and hostels, all Tourist Information Offices and standard information offices at Stephansplatz, Karlsplatz, Westbahnhof and Landstrasse.

You really can't go wrong purchasing an all day pass for the tram, bus and U-Bahn. If you plan to do any sightseeing, you'll get your money's worth out of the ticket.

You'll find the machines to purchase the tickets around various tram/metro stations. The touch screen will let you pick which language you want. There will be an option for what type of ticket you want. It'll prompt you for payment (credit cards are accepted) and out comes you ticket! There will blue boxes around the stations and on the trams to validate you ticket and you're done!

I find the tram to be a great way to see the city and it's a great if it starts to rain outside.

One way ticket for all kinds of transport costs 2 euros. It's a better option to buy a 5 euro 24h Vienna card for all the transport vehicules or a 72h vienna card for 12 euros.
The Vienna card is valid for trams, busses and subway 24h a day.

Vienna Card & day tickets: Wien Karte
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you are in Vienna for the day it is probably worth your while buying a 24-hour Wien Karte for 5 Euros. This allows you to travel on buses, trams and the U-Bahn. It is far more convenient than buying tickets for each separate journey.

Once you have bought your ticket remember to validate it before commencing your first journey using one of the validating machines located in stations and on buses/trams.

Vienna Card & day tickets: VIENNA CARD This transport...
  • Tip Rating:
  • VIENNA CARD
This transport card allows you 3 days of any public transport (Trams, Bus, U-Bahn, S-Bahn) in Vienna for 3 days for 15 euros. It will be useful if you are in a hotel far from the center or if you plan to visit many places in the suburbs. If you are planning to stay mainly inside the central rings, you better buy individual tickets, as you'd do most of your visits by feet.
You can buy the cards in Tourist Info, Tabaks and Hotels. You'll have discounts of about 1 euro in many museums (and in the bus to the airport) with the Vienna Card.

Get a Day Ticket / Vienna Card / Week Ticket and use the public transport system. Its one of the best in the world (and no i am not saying that cause i live here)

There are 5 Subway Lines (Line No. 5 does not exist ... politics) and numerouse Tram and Bus Lines. (Buses have a A after the number so Line No. 48 is a Tram 48A is a bus)

There are are also 4 Tram Lines which use Letters instead of Numbers (D,J,N,O) so dont be confused.

From 00.30 - 5.00 there are night lines which operate on a 30 Minute Shedule and are especially in the outer districts rather scarce. Which means that taking a cab is the faster option. (But also the much more expansive one)

If you have a Day / Week Pass you can also use the Trains of the OBB (but only inside the city limits).

Vienna Card & day tickets: Austrian Airlines or U-Bahn

  • I arrived by Austrian Airlines from Moscow (also possible by Aeroflot), 2.5 hours flight, very precise schedule, landed exactly at 16:45! I suppose you can arrive by any major airline from most of the big cities. Train or car is also an option.
Vienna has a very convenient metro system, or 'U-Bahn'. Also, buses or trams (Strassbahn). Loved it! You buy tickets either 1 ride (1.30 Euro, as far as I remember it is valid for 1 hour), or 24 hours, or 72 hours, they are valid for all kind of city transportation, including metro, Schnellbahn, buses and trams. Before entering the U-Bahn you must validate your ticket in a small blue automate that is found at the entrance. Same automates are installed in the buses and trams.
