 | Nassau Flights and Airline Tips | 1 - 10 of 10 | | Don't let yourself get scammed by taxi drivers. The Frommers guide says all cabs should have meters. However none of the metered cabs were running their meters. And let me clarify what a cab is in the Bahamas. Most of them were old Toyota or Mitsubishi mini-vans. Some were old Suburbans or Mercedes, but they all have Taxi written on the front of the vehicle. There is a chart that says how much a cab should be from Point A to Point B. For example $12 from Cable Beach to Downtown, or $15 from the airport to Cable Beach. We were not aware of this chart and ended up paying $20 for our ride from the airport to the Wyndham on Cable Beach. Be sure to veryfy your fee befire getting in the cab. We rented a motorbike. It's exciting driving in the Bahamas because they drive on the left side of the road. Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane

Don't get that 'BA' flight from Gatwick. They cram you in like sardines. Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane

The Nassau Taxi's is a story on its own. If you come by cruise ship expect a bunch of locals waiting for you to try to get you into their cab or private car. Licenced drivers are almost undistincable from unofficial ones. There are local fixed rates. Don't go into private cars with no clear taxi markings and always ask for a bill at the end. If you are sightseeing in Nassau and staying on Paradise Island, they have a small water taxi service. For $3 they take you to the marina where it should be a short walk to the major hotels. The reverse trip takes you to the quay wall near the straw market. The only problem with this is that the boat won't leave until its pretty full, so look for one that already has quite a few people aboard. They run until six. Leave a Comment Theme: Ship/Boat

You can actually travel around the Bahamas by Mail Boat. They have a horrible reputation for punctuality and generally just aren't used, but you can do it for a pretty good price. Other than the mailboat, your option for inter-island travel is pretty much limited to air. There is one high speed ferry that hits two or three main islands, but costs as much as a plane ticket. The mailboats aren't quite speedy either, as you can tell by the times shown in the schedule above. Leave a Comment Theme: Ship/Boat

Our hotel was situated on Cable Beach, which is about a 15 minute drive from the main part of Nassau. Nassau has a great bus transportation system using small buses called Jitneys. If you're staying on Cable Beach you'll take the #10 bus to Downtown. The best thing about these buses is that it's only $1 per person each way, while the taxi would be $12 each way. Not all Jitneys are created equal. Some are quite old, dented and dirty. One even had a WRENCH to open the door from the inside! All buses had those pine-tree shaped air fresheners. Don't take the Jitney if you're claustrophobic. They can pack you in like sardines. But it's a great value if you're on a budget. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

There are two different buses in this picture of rush hour on Bay Street in Nassau. The one on the right is a school bus - just like ordinary school buses. On the left is one of the jitney buses which run all over the island during the day. These buses are quite cheap - about $1 to ride to the end of the line. Since Bay Street is one way, if you want to get downtown from East Bay Street you have to go over to the street that is one way the other way. To hail a jitney bus, you do a kind of reverse wave. Hold your hand up like you want to be called on in class, and move your hand forward toward the bus driver. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

just in general, traffic on the main streets in Nassau and on the island as a whole moves very quickly and bumper to bumper. People from larger US or European cities shouldn't have a problem coping with this, but Australians, Californians and people from smaller cities where the pace is slower should be ready for a challenge. The Bahamas drives on the left, but that doesn't mean you will necesarily be getting British style cars, with the steering wheel on the opposite side. You could get one, but many more cars are in the American style, and the toll booths are built to accomodate them, not the British makes. Gasoline is very expensive by American standards. When I was there, the price had come DOWN to $3.45 a gallon Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

If you're in Nassau for the day or week and don't have a rental car but want to go to the Atlantis Hotel Resort, you need to catch the water taxi. These are passenger boats leaving Prince George Wharf and depositing you NEAR but NOT RIGHT AT the Atlantis! Purchase your roundtrip ticket at Festival Place information booth or nearby. When we were there last, tickets ran about $6 round trip. You must have a ticket to board. Between Prince George Wharf and the pier near Atlantis, usually a very informative "guide" will tell you all about what you are seeing on the way to Paradise Island. The "guide" is not necessarily an employee of the water taxi, but makes his living from the tips he receives from passengers on board. If you think the guy has done a good job, don't be a cheapskate like a lot of people. They go over to the Atlantis and drop a bundle in the casino and the shops, but can't give this guy a measley dollar for doing an honest job! Besure to check the time for the last returning water taxi back from Paradise Island. I believe they leave every half hour during operating hours. If you miss the water taxi, you will have to take a land taxi for sure! PICTURE TO FOLLOW. Leave a Comment Theme: Ship/Boat
