 | Bangkok Wat Traimit - Temple of the Golden Buddha Reviews | Tips 1 - 10 of 64 | | This temple was very near the Hualamphong Train Station. As you enter there is a big temple in the middle and the ticket office is on your left. I bought the ticket (though nobody was controlling the entrance) and climbed the steps at the left up to the small pavillion where the Golden Buddha is. It is very nice this medium sized Buddha all covered in gold. Around him you will find people offering flowers and little gold shhets to other smaller buddhas and monks statues. I visited Wat Traimit during a visit to Bangkok in September 2007. Wat Traimit is located in Bangkok’s Chinatown district, about 5 – 10 minutes walk from Hua Lamphong MRTA station. In all honesty there is only one good reason to visit this temple - the world’s largest solid gold Buddha! The golden Buddha stands at 3 metres tall and weighs 5.5 tonnes. It was undiscovered until the 1950s, but then an outer layer of plaster began to peel away, exposing the solid gold icon beneath! Apparently, after this discovery, lots of other Buddha icons had their outer layers peeled away, but no others were found to be hiding solid gold figures. The temple itself was nothing special to look at from the outside, and was in fact closed when I visited. Instead, the majority of visitors pass by to the left of the temple and purchase their tickets to see the golden Buddha (20 Bahts) from a small kiosk. They then climb a flight of stairs to where the famous Buddha is located on the first floor of a modest pavilion. As well as the large and impressive centrepiece, there is also a host of smaller Buddhas with fake gold coverings in the pavilion. Next to the golden Buddha there is a counter selling postcards and other golden Buddha related souvenirs. Wat Traimit – the world’s largest solid gold Buddha! Wat Traimit is a small temple that is famous for the solid gold Buddha that it houses. It was discovered in the 1950's when a stucco covered Buddha was accidently dropped when being moved, revealing the solid gold Buddha which weighs over 5 tons. Wat Traimit is one of the most important wats in Bangkok, mainly because of the statue of Lord Buddha that it houses, the well-known Golden Buddha. Not only is gold its outer layer, no. The whole Buddha is made of solid gold!!! The temple is close to Hualamphong Railway Station and you can take it as a startpoint of a walk around Chinatown. The building itself is cramped between other buildings, so it is difficult to take a good photo of the whole wat. The most impressive feature of this place is to think about the 5 tons of gold... The Temple of the Golden Buddah is considered as one of the must see temples in Bangkok. Inside the temple lies the solid gold statue of Buddah weighing almost 5 tons. Lots of tourist come and visit this temple esp in the morning. Phone: 623 1226Directions: Near Hualamphong Station

This amazing solid gold 5.5 ton Buddha was covered by a thick layer of mud until the mud cracked to reveal to sheen of gold when it was moved one day. Kind of symbolic that beneath all the external mud, there is an internal gold waiting to be discovered. The temple is located near busy Bangkok Chinatown next to a school compound. Amused to see that you can drop donation for good luck in various boxes labelled those who are born on Mondays, Tuesdays, etc and for those who do not know which days of the week they are born. This wat is not the architecture of a big, big super-duper Bangkok Wat. In fact it is more like a chaotic small temple lobbed in the middle of the ChinaTown, almost a rambling two storey house affair. Its excellent! And up on the second floor (that's correct ? up on the second floor) is a five and a half ton solid golden Buddha. Five and a half tons. Gold. What is this Wat about? I?ll tell you. In the Sukkothai period (around the 1400s-1550s) the Thai People made this massive, huge, immense and very, very, very, expensive Buddha. The Burmese neighbours were playing up at that time - and getting all shirty. So our Thai people (in fear of the Burmese nipping in and nicking the Buddha ?and melting down the gold to fund nasty war faring peeps who would then be able to cause chaos in the rest of Thailand?) our Thai folk hid it. In clay / concrete! Then (like all lads who put their keys somewhere safe so no one will accidentally pick them up) the concrete encrusted Buddha got sort of lost. Enter the East Asiatic Company ? an import export, warehousing brigade from Europe ? who bought the house and inside got this ?clayish / concrete? Buddha. "Let?s lift it out of the way and make some room" said the CEO, and in the process the workers chipped the thing. The normal approach is for workers to ?flee the scene? of a work cock up - some did. Though some hung around and realised what was inside. The Five Plus Ton Golden Buddha. And they stuck it up on the second floor, charge 50THB to look at it, and everyone lived happily ever after. Except the Burmese. They woke up and found it was all a dream and had no money to fund overseas pillaging ? which is why the current Burmese junta stops at home and causes chaos in Rangoon. An interesting place is Wat Traimit, if only for the way the Buddha is placed in a pretty small room, and the side bits going on around it. Like a shrine to the abbot, the chipped concrete leftovers, a postcard seller, and the temple moneychanger. 40 minutes should see you fit. Leave a Comment Directions: Traimit Road end of Yaowarat Road close to the China Town area and near Hualamphong Railway Station. Open 9.00 - 5.00 everyday.

I visited the huge Buddha at Wat Traimit on a tour during my first trip to Bangkok many years ago, and it made quite an impression on me. This year (2005), I've paid it another visit - this time on my own. It's much easier to get to than it used to be - a brand new Metro station has opened up at Hua Lamphong railway station nearby, a short walk away. The Buddha image itself is 3 metres high, weighs 5 tonnes or so, and is solid gold! Quite amazing really. If you are interested in the history of this Buddha image, the excellent Thailand Guidebook site has a short summary of it. If you happen to be visiting on a weekday, then you may get the added bonus of a lot of Thai kids milling around - there is a school attached to the temple. There's a 20 baht fee to see the Buddha image, and the temple is open from 8am until 5pm daily.
