Around the corner of the Ali Baba restaurant you will find the exchange office, the internetcafe, some more restaurants and several shops. At the backside of the Ali Baba bar & restaurant is a lovely garden. Here you can have your meals too. This is also the place to go for listening to local bands and dancing. In the Senegambia area, the road to the Senegambia Hotel at the beach you will find several restaurants, a few supermarkets, an internetcafe, exchange office and the Senegambian craftmarket. It's the place to meet. There are a lot of tourists around. You can sit at the terraces and chose to eat Italian, Lebanese, Caribbean, Gambian or international. Everybody knows the Ali Baba Restaurant, so it's a good meeting point . You can park around the corner. Just sit at the terrace and wait till your friends will arrive.
For lunch I liked the tuna salad at the terrace of Ali Baba. For pizza's I went to Paradisio La Parisienne at the same side of the road about 50 M from Ali Baba. In Ker Serigne, the place where we stayed for a few days, were a few local restaurants. Our favourite was Babula's cafe, where they served very cheap and delicious local dishes for a few euros. Most of the evenings there was no electricity at Babula's, so we had dinner with candlelight. At our third visit there was suddenly electric light. So I could see the place and found out it was also indoors quite a lovely café. It seemed even to be a bed and breakfast address.
I took all the three times the local dish with chicken. I forgot the local name of it. At our third and last visit they offered us a lot of extra chicken, rice and pommes frites for free. Kololi has a government-controlled restaurant on the road to the Monkey Park, with a good selection of local dishes. Paradisso Bar & Restaurant in Kololi is a very friendly, budget priced eatery with a large choice of dishes. The river camp we stayed at on our visit to Janjanbureh did us an excellent couple of meals, though be sure to wash your hands as cutlery is not always provided. We'd really recommend you buying some fresh local produce and sharing it with the locals, the Gambians are all good cooks. There could be a bit of a problem if you have a peanut allergy, domodah is the national dish!
Benachin has to be one of the best dishes, that's the spiced meat or fish and rice with tomato puree and vegetables. Ask for it as spicey as the locals eat it. Lamin Lodge is a restaurant built on stilts among the mangroves overlooking the Gambia River. (Lamin means "first-born son" in the local Mandinka language). To reach the restaurant, patrons must cross a causeway through the mangrove swamp, where they may see water birds and small fish in the water. The multi-level restaurant is constructed entirely of split logs, and it seems as if there are few, if any, flat surfaces in the whole structure. The building does not seem very sturdy, and it creaks in high winds. Patrons can even see the water underneath the building through cracks in the flooring. My group had lunch in the third-floor watch tower, which provided great views over the mangroves and river. We were even able to birdwatch while enjoying our lunch, seeing herons, egrets, kites, vultures, terns, and kingfishers.
The Lamin Lodge features fresh seafood caught from the nearby river, including several types of fish, oysters, and shrimp. (The mouth of the Gambia River contains salt water and therefore seafood). I had ladyfish with rice, and it was the best-tasting meal I had during my two weeks in West Africa. Leave a Comment Theme: LocalComparison: less expensive than average

The restaurant Lamin Lodge is situated right on the Gambia river. Silvia and I hitchhiked from the national park to the restaurant. After lunch, we took a boat from the Lamin Lodge back to Banjul. Leave a Comment Theme: Other
