Mini-bus taxi @ Bree Taxi Rank

A recently established shelter that houses mini-bus taxis which transport commuters from different townships to johannesburg and all other suburbs closer to Johannesburg.
It is also a shelter for street vendors who sell their wares ranging from vegetables, cooked meals to clothing.

You will probably visit Soweto in a tour group, so will be on an air conditioned bus.

Your other choice will be by car, and a good place to rent from is www.europcar.com. We use them often when on holiday here and they are inexpensive and professional.

You will see taxi’s everywhere, they are colloquially referred to as ‘black taxis’. They are kind of like what people in the UK would term a people carrier.

I have been in taxis MANY times in my life, especially when I lived in Cape Town. They operate by using special hand signals for destinations.

It is important you know what the correct hand signal is, as I found out many times!!! :)

Thousands of people who live in Soweto have the commute into central Johannesburg every day.

Many also go into the suburbs, for domestic work, or other work, getting there in a taxi jam-packed with people.

I have ridden in them many times myself and some of the experiences have been hair raising, but most times I felt safeish, albeit a tad squashed!

The photo is a fridge magnet of mine ~ I just love it!

Take only an arranged car from your hotel. Jo'burg is not a safe place, and it is worth the extra $$$ to get to and from Soweto safely.

Most non Sowetan residents
unless involved with some commuity or business
will be visitng with a tour group, liuckier ones will be visitng friends.

i was fortunate to have driven myself in frequently rpior to 1976
thereafter esoecially about the 90's did the same,
on my last two trips, 'Chommie' Lucas was my
transportation;
was fun to watch from the passengers seat

train, PUTCO buses, Zola minibuses and
nowadyas, the TATA 25 seaters
