 | South Africa Restaurants | Tips 31 - 40 of 161 | | Popular Restaurants | Other Restaurants Tips | All Tips (161) At the Westbrook Beach Hotel on the Indian Ocean just north of Durban. It was run by a very nice family and they had a long-time staff of dedicated employees. We stayed 4 nights for $400 Canadian and found it to be a very relaxing base from which to see the surrounding area. Right on the Indian Ocean - the waves were roaring in constantly and crashing on the shore. We had a ground floor room and it was fantastic to be able to step out onto the lawns and wander down to the small rocky cliff overlooking the sandy beach. Instructions were to keep the TV on at all times so its internal heat would keep the salty air from corroding its circuits!
We elected to get the pre-set Dinner menu (a different mixture of dishes each night) because we are not fussy eaters. It was a real pleasure to experience the services of the staff and the attention that they paid to small details. We had some great conversations with them - also enjoyed the resident cat who was on his last legs. This is a good friendly pub, used by the locals so is reasonably priced indeed. With dishes such as lasagne and burgers and chips, it's enough to make you feel right at home. Leave a Comment

A sosatie... you get a thin stick and pierce pieces of meat (eg. lamb), peppers (green, red and yellow), dried fruit (prunes, apricots, apple), onions etc... You can get these at some of the typically South Africa restaurants... but we make these ourselves at home. They are not hard to do! And they are ever so yummy!!!! :) Leave a Comment Theme: LocalAddress: at homeDirections: at home

You can have a picknick at the Boschendal wine estate on the lawns of the Boschendal gardens. You have to reserve ahead (easily possible via internet booking), they give you a confirmation, and you pick up the picknick basket (stuffed with cheese, a baguette, salads, dessert etc.) at a prearranged time. Drinks are extra. You can also visit the old manor house of Boschendal.

Joe Kools on North Beach, Durban is just as it's described, Cool! It's great for people watching during the day and a plate full of steak, seafood, Club sammy will fill the biggest appertite. Cocktails are the order of the day and by night this turns into the meeting place for any serious nightclubber. Joe Kools is a legendary place and most people find themselves experiencing it whilst in the area. Leave a Comment

If you're looking for traditional South African fare, then you'll want to go to someone's home and participate in their braii. Americans: a braii is a barbecue. Lots and lots of meat! Pictured here is the going-away brunch braii that our family prepared on the day we left for home. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

You can also braai the old fashioned way. It will take a lot longer before you can start to cook but it is nice to sit around the fire and have a beer while waiting for the charcoal to get ready. Leave a Comment Theme: Barbecue

Just any restaurant serving the meat of local wildlife. Try ostrich - excellent meat! There are very good restaurants in Sandton.
