 | South Africa Restaurants | Tips 1 - 10 of 161 | | Popular Restaurants | Other Restaurants Tips | All Tips (161) I have never tasted such wonderful sea food as I did in South Africa. We ate in several restaurants and they all had a sea view. Two examples were Port Elizabeth and Hout Bay. All of the seafood is fresh and delicious. We ate outside where possible which made is even more pleasurable. The food is not expensive. Enjoy!
My favourite dish, although I guess mundane was fish and chips. They were super fresh and done beautifully. Leave a Comment

Well I honestly can say that if I was allowed to move to this country I would turn into a lardass. The food was awesome, I had NO problems ever finding something to eat. Now normally I would never say this, or even admit it, but the meat was almost as good as our fine Alberta beef. In fact I would say that I would have a hard time choosing which was better. Seriously the meat was phenomenal. I never got to eat a watrhog which is a shame as I heard that they are pretty yummy. Oh and of course there are potatoes and veggies here too but nothing came close to winning my belly over like their meat.....mmmmmm
My favorite had to have been the Eland, but how do you choose....try as many as you can cause they are all worthy of digesting. As many of my friends and I were foreigner's, my friend's family decided to take us to a restaurant called Carnivore's to give us the opportunity to try some different African meats. The restaurant was located near Johannesburg, probably 20 or so minutes out of town. I tried Giraffe, Wilderbeast, Kudu, etc. I have to admit, giraffe was really quite tasty, but I couldn't bring myself to eat more than a bite. There's a white flag upon your table, and they continue to bring different meat selections to your table on Maasai Swords and slice them onto your plate until you put your flag down in "surrender." The ambience is great and they even break into performances of cultural dances and festivities at different points throughout the evening. There are more typical food choices like chicken and beef for those less-adventurous souls. :)
This excerpt is from the website I've linked below: "The Carnivore Johannesburg, adjacent to the Misty Hills Hotel is situated in natural surroundings overlooking the Krugersdorp hills. The entrance to the restaurant is by way of a thatched walkway through indiginous gardens and a spectacular water feature. The central attraction of the restaurant is a large circular open fire with 52 converted Masaai tribal spears holding a variety of 10 different types of meat such as pork, lamb, beef, chicken, ribs and sausages and including such game meats as crocodile, zebra, giraffe, impala, ostrich, etc, gently roasting and waiting for you to begin your feast!!!" I just thought this was a very cute location to stop and enjoy the scenery of the area. We had a delicious brunch that had every option we could have dreamed of. They have a lovely garden area in the center that I thought was gorgeous and a pond in the back. Beautiful area. You can sit on the back deck and soak in the view. We went to this restaurant after our arrival to Kaapstad. I must admit that we were very naive as we were quite scared to go out after hearing all these horrible stories about the crime rate. We decided to ignore our fear and walked out of our Youth Hostel on Long Street and had a dinner at Mama Africa Restaurant. It was quite amazing as they have a regular band playing real African music from the Equatorial part of the continent. The restaurant has a quite charming decoration as it looks like a sort of African hut inside with different animals and masks on the walls. You can also hang out by the bar and get in trance while listening to the rythms of Marimba music!
Do not miss out some indigenous food - Crocodile steak with Satay sauce, Ostrich steak, Kudu steak ( local antelope), Boobootie ( Afrikaner meat pie), great seafood ( I had prawns), superb Cape wines from local wineries. This is a great introduction to South African cuisine that has also an Asian flavour with lots of curry and Nothern European Dutch cuisine with boerwors ( local sausages), also a great seafood place Leave a Comment Theme: AfricanPrice: US$11-20 » Currency ConverterComparison: more expensive than averageAddress: Long StreetDirections: It's at the very end of Long Street around the Bo Kaap area

With our hostess and her little daughter we visited the covered market at Waterfront Harbour. Lots of food stalls where Indian or African food was made. It all looked very fresh and appetizing. I bought samosa's all the time. Love those. Leave a Comment

This is a South African chain of restaurants that specialise in seafood. We have been to a few in various parts of the country, and they generally have good service. The last time we went was to the Monte Casino branch... Service was okay, not as good as usual to be honest, they got the order wrong and we waited too long for one dish, and as we wouldn’t eat till she had got her dish, ours then got cold. So they had to warm them up again. It is important that dishes for one table are served together, we feel. Other than that, it was a thoroughly enjoyable meal! And of course we will be back!
The food is excellent quality here, but you do pay for it! Even when we come here when on holiday (sending British Sterling), we feel the prices are too high. The food is really good though. We usually have seafood platters, with lobster, prawns, line fish, calamari and mussels, which serve two people. Very well I might add! We always have leftovers. One always leaves here sated and satisfied! Leave a Comment
