You have to have a car to get around this area.

There are no trains and hardly any buses.

You will need to hire a car (Nova Car Hire is fantastic), or go as part of a tour group, in a bus.

Nova car hire are cheap, with excellent service. We have used them a few times, ordering a car necessary for wherever we will be travelling.. and they have been on time and all has been fine.

Highly recommended!

As we drove back to Oudtshoorn, we passed a couple of interesting cars and a home-made bike. I had to take a photo!

One was a lovely, well-cared-for vintage car, which was going veeery slowly... and the other was of a man on a home-made bike! He was peddling uphill!!!

The third photo is of a bakkie with some blokes on the back of it... this is typical for South Africa.. when there isnt space in the cab, people sit in the back.

Rush Hour in the Karoo

Most of the visitors would probably arrive by car. If you do from Port Elizabeth or Cape Town you would travel along the N2 National Road. Coming from Cape Town turn off the N2 in Mossel Bay and head inland on the R328, if you come from Port Elizabeth turn off the N2 in George and head inland on the R 29 where you cross the Outeniqua Pass.

The R 62

One of the very scenic routes that passes along Oudtshoorn is the route 62 that travels from Cape Town via Worcester - Robertson - Montagu - Barrydale - Ladismith - Calitzburg to Oudtshoorn and then continues to Prince Albert. The scenic route runs paralell to the two mountain ranges that flank the Little Karoo and offer some of the best wine estates in the country.

The closest airport to Oudtshoorn is George. SAA the national air carrier offers services from Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban to this airport on the Garden Route.
