The Cango Wildlife Ranch is situated just outside Oudtshoorn in the Little Karoo, and since its inception in 1977 it has grown to become one of the largest tourist attractions of the region. Purchased as the Cango Crocodile Ranch by Andrew and Glenn Eriksen in 1986, the focus of the ranch shifted towards the plight of endangered species, and in line with this dedication it was expanded to include a number of big cats, with its first breeding programme focusing on the highly endangered Cheetah. The Cango Wildlife Ranch and its breeding centre is carefully designed so that its more than 47 species of animals and reptiles can roam peacefully in comfortable natural enclosures, giving visitors the opportunity to closely observe, and in some cases, interact with a wide variety of unusual and endangered animals. This was something I had always wanted to do! The caves have been declared a National Monument and has breathtaking beauty and charm. The tunnels, halls (called 'phreatic chambers') and rock formations here are formed of limestone and rock, after many thousands of years of water dripping into the cave through cracks. The cave itself is 5.3km in length, with some massive halls and smaller and narrower tunnels. The speleothems, stalagtites and stalagmites (please excuse my spelling?) are awesome, as are the crystal and flow structures. A standard tour can be done in one hour, or a more involved adventure (and dirty!) tour and a half hours... but you need to be rather slim to do this one! I opted out ;) The tour guide was very good and knew his stuff... although he did tell a few 'trying-to-be-funny' stories too... but some people enjoy that I guess! We tipped him R10 when we exited as a thank you. There is no shortage of things to do in this locality with a tour through the fascinating Cango Caves of stalagmites and stalactites, and Cheetahland, a place where you can stroke the fastest animal on earth while it purrs like a tractor. There are some spectacular mountain passes with the Swartberg Pass the most sensational in South Africa. The wonderful twisted sedimentary layers of rock sport colours that look as if a painter were splashing about with his palate. The 24 km road has some awesome sheer drops and hair pin bends leading down to great echoing canyons. Leave a Comment

Oudtshoor is well known for its ostrich farms. There are lots of them everywhere, and you'll be able to see them as you aproach the town. The tours are OK: lots of info on ostriches and some other stuff. The fun thing is to get on top of the ostrich, and if you weigh less than 80 k, then you'll be able to ride it! Be careful though, you'll probably fall. Leave a Comment Address: All around Outdshoorn

This caves are quite amazing. There are 2 tours, but if you really want to experience the caves, then take the "Adventure Tour" which will take you to every cave there is, and the small ones, where you'll have to crawl over the stones to pass by. If you don't like close and tight spaces, then it's not recommended. Leave a Comment Address: Just off OudtshoornDirections: It's quite close to town and there are road signs everywhere

This pass is the link between the little and the big Karoo and the drive up there is breath taking. There are lot of sharp turns, but the views are worth it. We drove through the Meiringspoort and on to the Swartberg Pass. This pass surprised us. We thought about a normal road, but it was a sand road, and mostly so small that only one car can travel on it. Here and there, we saw an opportunity to let other cars pass. But this was not necessary because going up, we didn’t see one car. You can imagine that this took a long time to drive up. But the view on the top was great. That winding sand-road going up. We were glad we did this. But after the top, the road didn’t ended as we thought. It was downhill and then ups again. We saw the first car just behind the first top, one car in more than one hour; it sounds like a very busy road. But a the second top, we saw 2 cars standing with tourists, also taking pictures. And on the way down, we passed more cars. But we still are on a sand road. Leave a Comment

The Cango Wildlife Ranch is a particular favourite for visitors, especially those with kids! They have ostriches to ride on, cheetahs, Pygmy hippos, Nile crocodiles, white lions, Madagascar Ring-tailed Lemur, Campbell ducks, King Cobras and even Bengal tigers. On their website they say 'Welcome to Cango Wildlife Ranch the conservation heart of the Little Karoo' And they mean it. They are a big part of the conservation process of various animals.. and many animals here arent local (South African, or even African!) animals, as seen in the list above. They have breeding programs too, whcih mean some animals are only here for s short time, during their breeding season. THE CHEETAH CONSERVATION FOUNDATION This foundation was founded in 1988 and aims to ensure the survival of the cheetah and other endangered species. It is a registered non-profit organisation and depends on private funding and visitors to pay for the upkeep and ongoing running of the program. They have an 'adopt a cheetah' facility, which is an excellent way to bring funds in for the cheetahs.
