 | Province of North-West Things To Do | Tips 1 - 7 of 7 | | Popular Things To Do | Other Things To Do Tips | All Tips (7) The stunning Pilansberg Game and Nature Reserve. We went to Pilansberg again in January 2007 and had a fabulous time! I actually had my birthday here and a better present I could not have asked for! Pilansberg is a neighbour of Sun City and the Lost City. The park has over 200km of good dirt roads, so one feels confident as a driver to self-drive. They have guided day and night tours too. The park is actually in the setting of an extinct volcano... with many rare types of plant life and rocks structures, with some minerals found too, it is studied by scientists and geologists from all over the world. In the park you will find a number of Iron and Stone Age sites... very exciitng! The whole park is bordered by 3 ridges/rings of hills. This structure of the park is named the 'Pilanesberg National Park Alkaline Ring Complex'. Its vegetation is 'bushveld', settled inbetween the dry Kalahari desert and the more lush 'lowveld'. Their bird hides are little gems. Leave a Comment

The Lost City consists of a stunning fairytale hotel, and a waterworld-wonderland. There is a fake sea (with real beach sand and rolling waves), rapids, quite a few water rides etc. A lot of fun for adults and children alike. You can only get into the Valley of the Waves if you pay an extra fee as a Sun City Hotel day visitor/resident (this fee differs, depending on what package you take and the number of people in your party), or as a Lost City Hotel resident (where this is included in your hotel fee). This park lies over 25 hectares, and consists of a jungle, adventure areas, water fetaures and a man made beach with mechanically operated waves (they roll as normal waves do). They have qualified lifeguards on duty all the time and security is great. You can rent a locker for your possessions if you want to go on water rides too. Leave a Comment

Visit Madikwe Game Park where they have the Big Five to show you. This is a private reserve of about 75 000 hectares, and costs more than the National Parks, like Kruger Park, but is a particularly nice reserve. There are many things to do here, but 5 of the biggies they offer here are: Open vehicle game drives, night drives, guided bush walks, birdwatching and conferencing. They cater for corporate parties too, and, in this gorgeous wildlife environment, what could be better for a work weekend away? This reserve is malaria free - which is a HUGE bonus! Leave a Comment

Visit Sun City which neighbours Pilansberg (and is in the same resort as Lost City), gamble to your hearts content, play golf, parasail, jet ski, laze by one of the pools, eat a variety of food etc... Easily driveable from Johannesburg (2 hours drive), this is a lovely day outing/week end getaway for the family, or with friends. There is a bus service that operates from some Johannesburg hotels too. I have taken the one from Sandton Sun Intercontinental before. Leave a Comment

Originally named Treurfontein (well of sadness), the name was changed to honour Admiral Gaspard de Coligny, a staunch French Huguenot who was killed in the Massacre of Saint Bartholomew's Day (24 August 1572) in Paris At first sight, Coligny gives the impression of being just another dusty, windswept village - forgotten in the mists of time and bypassed by modern life. In a way it has retained its "olde worlde" character, but it hides a wealth of history and fascinating character. Leave a Comment Directions: Coligny is situated in the central part of the North West Province on the road to Lichtenburg

The original name of the city, Mahikeng, literally means "the place among rocks". The name refers to the volcanic rocks that provided temporary shelter to Stone Age humans in their hunt on animals drinking water in the Molopo River. This name was given to the area in 1852 by early BaRolong chiefs who had settled along the river, near the present day village of Rooigrond, after the upheaval of the "Difequane". The "Difequane" was a period of intertribal war, aggravated by the passage of the exiled Zulu chief, Mzilikazi, through the area.
