The Waldorf Astoria: A Bit Of Class?    Check Rates

  • 3rd Time Lucky? We got a good deal with our holiday booking and decided to go upmarket..or so we thought. Common areas of the hotel are very old money and classy. Our room was tucked away in a corner, terrible view, and hadn't been updated for some years. The housekeeping staff were very nice, but the room certainly wasn't what I expected.

Great common areas. Not much to do around on an evening.Next visit we are going to rent an apartment.

We stayed at the Waldorf to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. From the minute we stepped through the door we had one good experience after another. We booked a suite for two nights and when we checked in they told us that we have been upgraded to a luxury suite. Wow, what a room! It was bigger than most apartments. The only problem is that it will be very hard for us to stay anywhere else after staying here. We would definately recommend the Waldorf.

Our room was outstanding. It had a huge marble entry with double doors. A small full kitchen with mini bar. A large living room with fireplace. The bedroom was beautiful. And the dressing room and bathroom is beyond words. We felt like we were staying at one of the Newport Mansions! We were on the corner so there were lots of windows. We had the best view all the way up Park Avenue. Amazing! (Notice picture). The first night dinner was at one of the great restaurants in the Hotel. Bull and Bear.

  • We fancied bit of class to our stay in 2005 and managed to get a good deal at the Waldorf Astoria. The "standard room" was huge, with a little dressing room, bathroom, sofa and two double beds. However, the decor was still lingering in the 1930s, and furniture heavy wooden and like something from my Gran's home.

The restaurant - Oscars - on one corner of the hotel (open to Non residents) served up quality breakfasts at a price you'd expect from the Waldorf, and the bar served fantastic Tiramisu cocktails.

It was a great opportunity to live like a snob for a few days, but I wouldn't want to go back, as this hotel was basking too much in the olden days for my liking. I couldn't fault the service though, even if the lift door could be vicious!

Its facade is very impressive, and at Christmas time the lobby is decorated very festively!
There is also now a Starbucks located in the basement.

The old dame of New York lives up to its name as one of the most celebrated classical hotel in the city. The lobby and tea room with its grand piano is a must if you are traveling to NYC.
Sir Harry's bar is also a favourite of mine for late night martini's.

However, I wasn't impressed by the quality of the accommodation. First of all, I understand that this is an old building. However, when you are charging me $310/night I care about the small things.
My first complaint was that the shower pressure was not good; then the cleaning staff always forget to replenish my mouthwash and shampoo; I was also unlucky that during my stay, the fire alarm constantly went off (like 5-6 times / night); but what really upset me was how rude the cleaning staff was.
I was sick for 2 days of my trip, so I needed to stay in during the day to sleep and put my 'do not disturb' note on my door. The cleaning lady had the nerve to call and barked at me asking what time I was planning to leave the room so she can come and clean it. I'm sorry but in my mind 'do not disturb' means clearly that one doesn't want to be disturb.

When you are in NYC, come visit the Waldorf for tea, or a martini, or the Sunday brunch. But take your money and sleep elsewhere.

This hotel is a historic landmark, the setting of Al Pacino's famous movie "Scent of a woman" and is located on what in my opinion is the most beautiful street in Manhattan, the Park Avenue.

  • Again, I don't have first hand experience of staying here but I'm pretty sure it's good.

Every US President since 1931 has stayed here - not that this makes it good either but if it's good enough for them.....

  • Ok, I've never stayed here either, but it being one of the most famous hotels in the world, I don't think you'll have a bad night.

The orignial Waldorf-Astoria hotel was at the site of the Empire State Building. It started as family fued. It started as two seperate hotels next door to each other: the Waldorf Hotel owned by William Waldorf Astor and Astoria Hotel owned by Catherine Astor. The two hotels were later joined and connected by a bridge.

When the Empire State Building scheduled to be built, the hotel, now one, moved uptown.

I've never stayed here but be prepared to pay in excess of $200 USD per night. I have toured the lobby as well as enjoyed their banquet room. My company has their Christmas party here every year. The hotel staff is very corteous and professional and the place is kept in an exceptionally clean state. At some point, I will stay here, but at the time of this update, I am living a few minutes away, it doesn't make sense.

This is one of the most acclaimed hotels in New York. It's featured in the movie, 'Coming to America.' Please note that this picture is off of their website.

The Waldorf Astoria: Scent of a Woman    Check Rates

  • This is Waldorf, one of the finest in New York. I remember in the movie "Scent of a Woman", this is the only hotel Al Pacino would stay. He then danced with the beautiful Gabrielle Anwar but I think that's in a different hotel.

I never stayed here. When I visited NYC I stayed with a friend in NJ. Just by looking at the nice uniform of the doormen I don't think this hotel is for me.

  • To me, this stay at the Waldorf Astoria will always be a special one, since my Dad arranged it as a graduation present for me. The nice part about it was, that he was granted a nice discount, so that this room was quite affordable for us!

You can probably imagine the gorgeous feeling of residing in a Grand Hotel after weeks of motels and private rooms!!!

The Waldorf Astoria was one of the first grand hotels to combine luxurious elegance with a multitude of services and conveniences. The location is superb: the world famous shops of Fifth and Madison Avenues are only minutes away, just as numerous art galleries and specialty shops. The hotel itself is home to some of the world's most luxurious boutiques.

The Waldorf Astoria was built in 1893, so it is a true Art Deco landmark in the midst of New York.
