Sir Toby's Hostel: A Goody-Goody Idyll...

  • It's extremely rare - if not unique - that checking into a hostel actually IMPROVES your standard of living, but that's what seems to happen when you stay at Sir Toby's.

Situated in a newly refurbished house in Holesovice, Toby's looks and feels so gorgeous that you're almost tempted to make yourself a permanent resident. And something's wrong when a hostel has a kitchen better than my parent's back home, but the plus side of that is you're really encouraged to get down to some decent home cooking and save your Korunny for more important things like beer.

There's fast internet connection, a cellar bar and chapel, a beautiful garden and sweet little touches like vases of fresh daisies on the stairs. The receptionists are on the whole genuinely friendly, and their laid-back and kindly attitude seems to rub off on the guests.

It's a bit of a hike from the centre, but it's in a peaceful neighbourhood and the tram connections are good, so it hardly matters.

In all, Sir Toby's makes up for all the crappy, decrepit and downright creepy hostels you may have stayed in in the past.

There is, however, a downside. Rules. Rules, rules everywhere. Everytime you visit a new section of the hostel, or open a kitchen drawer, there's a new list of rules to read before you proceed. You almost can't go to the bathroom without reading a ten point list of Sir Toby's etiquette on how to use it.

The rules proliferate the hostel from top to bottom, from the cellar bar where you can drink but can't smoke (In Czech Republic? Are you joking?) to the several categories of lockers, to my favourite, the balconies.

The rule for the balconies is after ten pm, only one person is allowed on the balcony at one time - and when they're out there, they're not allowed to talk, presumably to themselves.

It's a shame. The otherwise perfect hostel is marred slightly by this incessant goody-goody nitpicking. There's no rough edges, and I hate to say it, paradise is a little boring!

Undoubtedly one of the best hostel experiences I have ever had.

I booked well in advance (months rather than weeks) and needed a private room for two. We were given 'Balcony' (the rooms rather beautifully have names rather than numbers) and we were not disappointed. It had a balcony as the name suggested, the room itself was gorgeous, with parquet flooring, antique furniture, a really nice en suite shower room and even a little kitchen area with a sink and a kettle.

The area (Holesovice) is excellent too, it is residential and has excellent facilities for buying your own food, also great bars and restaurants (Lucky Lucianos next door does fantastic pizza, and the Kavarna on Kommunardu, opposite the tram stop has honestly some of the best food I've ever eaten.)

Only one thing slightly marred my otherwise perfect time at Sir Toby's - I was ill on the last day of my trip and so spent the day in bed. A male cleaner came into my (private!) room without knocking and when he saw I was in my bed proceeded to continue with the cleaning. I told him I was leaving the next day, and that this was a private room and I was ill (and to be fair a bit grumpy!) but he didn't really get the message, this left me a bit annoyed and to be honest a bit intimidated. Surely in a private room you wait until that party have left, and if it's a girl in a room on her own you leave it till later?? Hmmmm... anyway that was only a tiny irritation, the hostel is wonderful. GO NOW!

The hostel has a lovely cellar bar that serves a great breakfast buffet (though be careful, a lot of the stuff has been put out for a few days on the trot - I saw mouldy bread!) and has board games, cheap drink and even a chapel/meditation area for those seeking solace.
Internet access is well provided, there is an elevator for disabled guests (or just lazy ones sometimes) and the place has been decorated really well, it is bohemian but comfortable and practical. The hostel is quiet enough at night too, with the bar tending to be the focus of any late night shenanigans!

The staff are on the whole very friendly, there are books available to buy in case you are short on reading material, and on arrival you receive a handy map and guide to the local area, they really have thought of everything.

    Sir Toby's Hostel: Best hostel
  • Tip Rating:

  • Sir Toby's is definitely one of the best hostels in Prague. Reasonably cheap, clean, nice spacious rooms and friendly staff all help to make it what it is. The staff even do your laundry for you for a small price, and have it ready the next day.

It is located across the river in Holesovice so you can get away from the hectic city centre and relax. It's also very close to the Prague market.

Sir Toby's Hostel: One of world's best hostels
  • Satisfaction:
  • I stayed at Sir Toby's Hostel in Prague for 3 nights, 2 days in October 2003. The hostel is not in city centre, but convenient enough, it takes about 10 minutes by bus/tram from the hostel to the centre. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The hostel is extremely clean and well-decorated. I stayed in a 6-bed female dorm room i(the blue sky room) in which there was a bathroom/shower. It was definitely one of the best experiences I've ever had with European hostels.

Sir Toby's Hostel: Prague's best hostel
  • Satisfaction:
  • Most importantly I had fun during my stay in the hostel, more than just a night sleep. Staff was friendly as soon as I stepped in. Her name is Petra! She was very friendly which makes us feel warm and welcome to the hostel.

I had a dinner in the kitchen and met few new friends from US and Hong Kong. We had a lot of fun after the dinner as we went down to the underground room where the pub. But we had our own room to play around. It was fun! And definitely clean and safe for lone female traveller like me! AND according to Petra, I was probably the first Malaysian to have stayed in the hostel! How cool! :D

  • Directions: Get off at Vltavska with Metro Line C. Take any tram that departs TO your left. Get off at Delnicka tram stop. Walk towards the intersection and turn left onto Delinicka Street. The hostel will be about 100m down on the left hand side (past the pizzeria).

  • Sir Toby’s is situated in the up and coming area of Prague- Holesovice. The hostel itself is clean and modern with a huge kitchen and bar in the cellar. There are lockers available for personal possessions by all beds. Although this hostel is not in the centre there are good tram links (about 20 minutes to the centre) and at night there are night trams back to the hostel.

If you want a quite time in Prague then this place is perfect. My only problem with this hostel was the rules. For example, there is only one person allowed on the balcony at one time, ok, on the balcony there is a sign saying ‘no talking’ Well, If I have stuck to the first rule then who am I going to talk to? You are only allowed in the garden at certain times and NO SMOKING in the bar. This is Prague! Everydoor you enter there is a new list of rules to read.

The little details...... the fresh flowers placed on the stairs.
