 | Ilam Reviews | Tips 1 - 4 of 4 | | I spend two-three nights here twice every year. That doesn't make me a fan of this place, but, hey! - it's the best in Ilam! They have a restaurant on the third floor that serves average food. If you order your breakfast the evening before you're assumed a veteran of this place. The rooms vary (No 501 is my favourite), with squat or sit-down toilet, attached or common bath. Despite efforts such as warm water heaters in some rooms, the water remains cold. The beds are ok done and clean. Can be cold in the winter here, so in December-February bring a liner. You should pre-book to guarantee a room, this place is where district government visitors, officials, NGO-folks and business people stay , so there is a bit of competition. If it's full, try the Chiyabaari Guest House rund by people conected to the organisation NCDC (ask around). At any rate, try to avoid accomodation near the bus station and main road...
For some unknown reason they operate with room number such as 505, 506 and so on. But there aren't that many floors (as 5) nor so many rooms. It's just "pick a number" game. If you want very good food here you should order, or book the whole restaurant for an evening and order banquet Nepali food (snacks + daal bhat). This they do really, really well with extra staff hired in for the purpose. Good beer, too! Depending on who's on duty you may or may not get "bed tea" in the morning (by order). You may be kept awake at night by howling jackals in the tea gardens across the road (not joking!). Earplugs are useful against this and next-room neigbours using the TV for all its worth. "Guest's Satisfaction is our MOTTO" (written on the bill slips). Price: 400 NRS per night. If you for some reason have to stay overnight in Fikkal, choose Shikar. Shikar is a decent place with good standard Nepali food and relatively sheltered (from the traffic) rooms. Like the momo-place here in Fikkal (see restaurant tip), Shikar is run by a Gurung family. Just before you enter Fikkal from the Terai side, you will see Shikar built several floors literally leaning up the hillside on your left. It's a three minutes' walk into the main bazaar.
Good rooms, beds, toilets. Not very noisy, it's a bit above the traffic noise as the only one such place in Fikkal. Good chicken daal bhat, if you give them time to prepare. Billing is apparently difficult and takes time and contemplation. If you don't find space at Green View Hotel, you can proceed further along that side road (toward the college) where it is located, and you will find three more guest houses. They are said to be fine.

The only hotel in Fikkal, Ilam, however, this is the place to stay if you are anywhere in Ilam, Nepal. Great services and facilities along with home cooked meals, something out of the ordinary for the location. Highly recommended!
