In Beijing we stayed in the Harmony Hotel.
To me that was a good way to start our 4 week roundtrip.

The room was spacious and very clean. In the bathroom there was soap, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, comb (as in most Chinese hotels). The room was quiet.

For breakfast there was a buffet, with Western and Chinese dishes. The price for breakfast . . . . well, one day I payed 30 yuan, and the next day I only payed 20 yuan, so it was not really clear what the exact price was.

There was a business centre with (expensive) internet possibilities. It was much cheaper at the internetcafe near the Hutong quarter just behind the hotel.

The location was great, only a few minutes of walk towards the Beijingzhan Metro Station. And from there you could discover the whole City for a few Yuan.

There were also plenty of taxis near the railway station.

Jianguo Hotel: Nice hotel, nice location, nice service    Check Rates
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This hotel is located near the Beijing Railway Station. So if you get to Beijing by train, you will probably arrive only two blocks away from this hotel.

It is well located right between the Forbidden City and WTC. So taxis do not cost too much if taken from there.

Accomodations are very comfortable, price is average, breakfest in western style and service is friendly.

The hotel offers a health center where you can get body or feet massage. Specially handy when you stay all day long walking.

There is a Tourist information desk where you can get information on tours, exhibitions and shows in Beijing.

Also ATMs (Visa, Master, others) are available in the lobby.

I stayed there for twice: when I arrived in and left China. Service is very good, people are friendly and polite.

Nice international hotel which is the best option for one-day stops, by its location near the airport.

The restaurants located in the hotel are very good as well... visit the night club with the excuse to exchange your welcome drink voucher...

The hotel also offers a shuttle bus to and back the city centre every two hours. Another good reason not to spend money on taxis. A ride to city centre can be expensive.

This hotel was part of the package for the tour I purchased.

Had no preconceived ideas about it apart from reading it was a 5 star hotel, but was in the 2nd tier of hotels in Beijing. So I thought it would be nice, but nbot necessarily luxurious.

Was pleasantly surprised as we (the 3 travellers from Sydney who arrived at the same time) stumbled/dragged ourselves into the lobby at around 1.00 a.m. Looked a bit more style than I am normally accustomed to I thought to myself as I surveyed the lobby.

Lovely spacious rooms with good appointments.

Included compimentary use of bathrobes & cloth sandles. A very nice touch.

The staff responsible for looking after the room did a wonderful job, replenishing each day whatever appeared to be used. Some hotels will not do this on a daily basis.

Had a good gym with aerobic machines & weight machines. Along with this a sauna & steam room with a nice spa (big one & a small one).

It was well located a we could have walked to Tiananmen Square etc albeit probably 25 minutes.

All in all & very enjoyable stay.

Bamboo Garden Hotel: Secluded hutong hotel
  • Tip Rating:
  • I have NOT stayed at this hotel, but have visited it several times for a coffee. The staf have always been friendly and helpful.

The hotel is 3-star and is based around aold hutongs, very close to the Bell and Drum Towers in one of the older parts of Beijing. It is in an excellent location for the main sites of Beijing.

It was formerly the home of a Qing Minister of Posts, and more recently the home of the notorious Kang Sheng.

It is like staying in a private house or a museum, with covered corridors winding through little gardens and clusters of bamboo.

Rooms apparently have TV, minibar, etc.

GRAND HYATT BEIJING: Beijing's best hotel    Check Rates

  • Undoubtedly the best hotel in town. Located centrally, right next to Wang Fu Jing Shopping street. 15 minutes stroll to Tian An Men.

Grand Hyatt has a hidden secret in its basement. She has the one and only tropical pool in town. This indoor pool is cover with a false skyline of glittering "stars" and surrounding decorated with lush tropical plants and bird chirping sounds..

This hotel provides all the usuals; a laundry service, single rooms if you prefer a more comfortable, quieter night sleep, and dorms in the basement, whilst breakfast is basic cereal and toast. Prices are very reasonable, and staff are generally friendly.

The best part of the place however, is its charming location, with the beautiful hutongs right on your doorstep. Also, the architecture is something to behold aswell, as the place was built during the Qing dynasty, and looks and feels as if you are staying in your very own chinese temple.

(Bike rental and lockers are also provided, whilst you can pay extra for evening meals).

HUTONGS: I spent many a peaceful afternoon or morning just wandering the maze of old alleys and streets. And i admit, it was the first real time that it struck me where i was, and just how different this place is compared to home.

COURTYARDS: Most single rooms share a courtyard with the room adjacent, and this is a perfect way to meet up with fellow travellers, and sit out and soak up the ambience of the distant city noise.

ARCHITECTURE: unlike most modern or retro-styled buildings, this building truly has a story and a history, and every morning i was there i could not believe where i was.

Nice accomodations and a quite sober decoration in this Marriot hotel.

It is located in the same New World Mall complex, being actually one of its towers.

Western and Chinese breakfast are served on the 2nd floor.

For the visitor, it offers one of the best locations, excellent accomodations and facilities.

Excellent location between the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven (walk distance of about 20-30 min).

American bucks get you a four star hotel at discount prices. No joke. I think I spent about $60 a night and got a king size bed, a great view, a nice area with a couch and a couple of chairs.

The rooms are very nice. The webpage has a good look at one. They are very spacious and comfortable. The A/C was good. It kept me cool even though it was a very hot day. Plus, they gave me complementary breakfast and bottles of water. There is a KFC and a McDonalds across the street, but this is China, so eat at one of the local joints around the corner. Or, the Hard Rock cafe is a ten minute ride by taxi.

This is my favorite hotel in China. The service was way above what I got in Hong Kong or Shanghai. Cheaper too!

The Sports City Cafe is a sports bar to the extreme. The tour guide I befriended lost to me at a game of basketball on the court in the middle of the bar. It is totally geared towards the West, but locals come there too.

In addition to that, there is a formal dining area, and breakfast is served on each floor.

There is a gym, a pool, Sauna, Beauty Salon, Massage Centre and separate lounges equipped with televisions for ladies and gentlemen. Travel and business facilities are also there. They can arrange airport transfer, tours of the city (and great wall) and even hook you up with plane tickets.

There is a subway stop across the street, and a direct route west will lead you to the Palace Museum and Tienanmen Square. Great location!

Wangfujing Grand Hotel: Pricey, Western Indulgence in China    Check Rates
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Wangfujing Grand Hotel is one of the priciest places in Beijing, at almost US$150 a night. It's very ornate, service is excellent, and even-numbered rooms (I think) have good views of Beihai Park and the Forbidden City. Also, it's a nice 15-minute walk to Tiananmen Square. If you want to splurge in China, this is perhaps the place to do so (though it is a good idea to learn Mandarin, since much of the staff don't speak fluent English).
