In Lesotho we stayed in the Mmelesi lodge The Mmelesi lodge is situated along the road, two KM before you reach Thaba-Bosiu (the mountain at night) from Maseru.
We slept in nice roundavels. In the afternoon we sat in the sun in front of our roundavel in our shirts. In the evening they brought a heater. First we were surprised, but quickly we understand why, because the temperature dropped a lot at night. In the morning we saw even ice on the water in the garden.

    Picture:
Landscape opposite the Mmelesi lodge at the other side of the road.

Nice roundavels in a beatifull garden, good restaurant with delicious food, friendly and helpful people.
    Possibility for hiring Basotho ponies.
Beautiful surroundings for walking and pony riding.

This is more than a Lodge. His owners have built a great development project in Malealea. They have employed a lot of people of the area, both at the Pony-trekking centre and at the same lodge. The village is very close to the Lodge, there is a supermarket, a school, a craft centre. There are a lot of activities to do in Malealea: walks, treks, pony-trekking, waterfalls, bushman paintings…
Children offer themselves to show you the village, the area and even their houses while talking to you about the school, their village, or asking you thousand of questions about your country. A great experience not to be missed.

They have huts for 2, 4 or more people, and also dorms. Huts and rooms have different facilities and prices are also different depending on them. They serve meals and there is also a bar and curio shop in it.

The Sani Top Chalet: SANI PASS
  • Tip Rating:
  • It is at Sani Top. It is said to have the highest pub in Africa. They have wonderful views.
They have dorms and rooms and they also serve meals. Horses can be hired and you can follow many hikes from here. For example Thabana Ntlenyana and, 6km to the south, to Hodgson's Peaks where there is a great view view south to Sehlabathebe and down into Kwazulu Natal. The weather at Sani Top can be extreme, in nights and in winter.

Sani Top Chalet: Highest in Africa
  • Tip Rating:
  • Sani Top Chalet overlooks the dramatic Sani Pass a twisting winding descent from Lesotho into South Africa.

At 2874m Sani Top Chalet is the highest pub in Africa and the beer is really cheap (by UK standards)!

Didn't stay here, don't know what it's like, but put yourself up at 9000 feet, atop a somewhat challenging pass, surrounded by nothing but vast spaces of alpine meadow and rock, covered in snow. This is isolated. Had we made the pass a day earlier, we would have stayed here, but we had to abort as we arrived to Himeville too late. There are other accomodations down the pass in South Africa if you need a place before you get to the pass. They are often full.

Sani Top has the highest pub in Southern Africa, so stop in and have drink... depending on your sense of adventure, you might want it after the pass... or before.

    Location.

Out in the wilds of the upper Drakensberg, you are on your own for shelter. There are no accommodations of any kind up here besides the occasional herdsmen’s hut or overhanging cave. The benefit is that you normally have the valley you camp in to yourself and with a good clear night, you have a whole lot of night sky to gaze up at. A whole lot of quiet to go along with that, as well.

    MALEALEA. The band
  • Tip Rating:
  • In the nights a chorus and a rock-band formed by teenagers in the village come to the lodge for a particular and funny concert. They make their own instruments with boxes, cans and whatever they find, but it really sounds good!
