Nile Hilton: Still a great location    Check Rates

  • Rather more comfortable than Mr L's first stay - it was the 6 Day War and he and the crew of his workboat were evacuated to Cairo from Suez and deposited on the top floor of the hotel for the duration. Well, we had to stay there for old times sake, didn't we?

It's still is a nice hotel - newer ones may be bigger and smarter, but the location is perfect, right next door to the National Museum and, being a Hilton, it has all the facilities you would expect from a hotel in this chain. The view from the rooftop terrace is wonderful, especially at sunset, you only have to step across the road to walk along the Corniche and the Ancient Egyptian panel in the lobby is the real thing.

Nile Hilton: In need of a massive facelift    Check Rates
  • Tip Rating:

  • Beyond having what could be the most enviable hotel location in Cairo - right smack beside the Egyptian Museum - the Nile Hilton has nothing else good to show - except old age, fading interiors and lousy service.

Age would have been a manageable factor, after all, hotels, like people, can grow old with grace - and wisdom. But not Nile Hilton - exteriors need a fresh coat of paint (at the very least), furniture is so 70ish (or even 60ish?), and the salesmen at the hotel's souvenir shops think they're still in the Middle Ages in Khan el-Khalili, harassing you to view their merchandise.

Service is as bad. My reservation, booked through the Hilton website, clearly indicated a non-smoking room with large single bed. Oh no, the front desk personnel insisted I would love the room he was going to give me - yeah, it just reeked of cigarette and had twin beds. So I had to request a room change - to a room that would had been hip and funky in the 70s.

Perhaps it's high time for this Cairo institution to retire or undergo a massive facelift.

The hotel's redeeming factor is its breakfast buffet, although service is clearly below par (unless you're blond and blue-eyed, so I've observed - no offence to Caucasians).

After a week of divey inexpensive lodgings and enduring the 12hr train (each way!!!!) down to Luxor and back, we splurged on our last night in Cairo. You might want to operate this way too...try to arrange a discount , while you're at it, based on what season it is and any corporate alliances you may have...

You either get a really cool Nile River view, or, a view of the noisy, teeming city. We had the latter, but that did include this right-next-door view of the Cairo Museum. The pool area is to die for and the on-site shopping center complex has internet access!! Bonus!

  • The Nile Hilton in my opinion has one of the most envyable positions in Cairo. Sitting on the Nile, with the corniche running along the front of the Hotel. The Nile Hilton is centrally located, being next to the Egyptian Museum & the hub of Midan Tahrir Square.

The hotel is Cairo's first 5 star hotel, maybe is not quite up to the usual Hilton standard. Service was very friendly & always gracious. The food was enjoyable with a very much international menu.

The secluded swimming pool is wonderful, certainly a must after a hot days sight seeing.

Expect to pay about $20 extra for a room with Nile views

The terrace here on an evening comes alive with wealthy Cairoians socialising and the wonderous smell of rose & honey shisha pipes wafting through a balmy evening. A great place for people watching.

Hhmm, you probably read how I came to Nile Hilton...
In case, you don't want to know, I was running out of money while I was in Sinai; So I called Pat (as he's also in Cairo) that I wanted to see him right away !
So he waited for me at Nile Hilton & the rest is history.
I craved for that soft bed & hot shower after 3 weeks staying at cheap hotels...
Anyway, Pat hated me smoking in the room so I dare not in case he chased me away so I smoked outside which was on the balcony overlooking The Egyptian Museum ! Sweeeeet!
Anyway, while staying here I went to several places !
Including Giza Pyramids...where I was conned there !

  • The Nile Hilton may not be the best and certainly isn't the newest hotel in the city but it does have a great location, especially if your interest lies in the Egyptian museum. Its only two minutes walk away. The hotel is also a pleasant place to while away a little time ! Its great for using the Metro (which is easy if you are going to Coptic Cairo) and in a city where many taxi drivers do not speak English, "Nil Hilton" is universally recognized :-) Try to walk out onto the main road to pick up taxi's when leaving the hotel as it is much cheaper than having the hotel get you one.

Pleasant rooms, nice peaceful outdoor coffee shop, several night clubs/bars

  • This hotel was a welcome getaway from the manic city outside. It serves good food and has a rooftop bar with amazing views over the city. The rooms are clean and the cleaning staff excellent (except when they hint for tips). If you can, get a Nile view room for great views and good people watching at night. The location is excellent with the Egyptian museum just out the back door and the Nile out front. It is showing its age but I believe Ritz Carlton is taking over and redeveloping the site at the end of 2008.
Be aware the road out front is very busy and also security is very heavy on entering the hotel.

  • I stayed here during March 2004. A pleasant enough hotel and the breakfast is good. Somebody used the phone in my room and they tried to charge me 4 Egyptian pounds which I bluntly refused to pay. In november I received an apology letter from the management. Wouldn't it be nice if you could lock your hotel room phone with a code so that you don't have to endure shouting matches in the reception on check-out.

Good breakfasts and great swimming pool. Great views over Cairo from the bar at the top of the hotel.

Nile Hilton: I was very pleased with this hotel.    Check Rates

  • Loved the room, loved the food, loved the location, loved service, and loved the price. Yes the building, rooms and public spaces are a bit dated, but who cares because the staff was the friendliest I have ever encountered. Clean rooms, clean lobby, clean everywhere. I paid 110 us dollars in November for a Nile view room. If you are going to Cairo you must stay at the Nile Hilton. All the other hotels popped into, the lobbies were packed (to the point of not being able to walk through) with tour groups. The Nile Hilton's public spaces were never crowded or rushed.

The entire staff seemed to know my name after the first day!!
