 | | | | Mena House Oberoi Cairo: Overrated and overpriced.
Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Facilities. The view of the pyramids from our palace suite was simultaneously humbling and empowering. The suite per se was pathetic. Severely dated amenities, running water that showcased a myriad of brackish colors, carpet and paint that was beyond worn and a bed that offered a significantly less then spectacular sleeping experience made me question how the Mena House was able to justify their asking price. I prefer to skip the Ritz Carltons and the Four Seasons in favor of hotels that offer an authentic charm or an unique experience. This hotel offered neither. In contrast, the common areas were nice, and at times, enchanting. Of particular note was the Khan El Khalili restaurant and the Abu Nawas nightclub. Both featured decor that was voluptuous and pleasing. The location of the hotel worked well for my purposes. Of the four nights I stayed in the hotel, 3 were spent exploring the pyramids or the desert and the hotel's proximity to these sights was appreciated. Travelers who intend to spend more time in the city center of Cairo would do better elsewhere as taxis into the city might take as long as 45 minutes. Service. Decent (a) Anytime the requested services were under the domain of the actual hotel staff...all worked out well. Last minute flexibility re my stay and the willingness to accommodate my access baggage while camping was much appreciated. (b) Anytime the requested services were under the domain of the onsite Misr Travel Agency...all worked out poorly or not at all. Certainly any tour booked with Misr was prompt and responsive. However, upon asking them any questions re events, tours or travel for which they did not have prearranged programming, their response ranged from lackluster to hostile. This is highly disappointing as my expectation of any 4/5 star hotel is that their guest relations/concierge desk is resourceful and eager to be of service. By outsourcing this duty to an external vendor, Mena House loses the opportunity to provide Four Seasons level service.
General. The reason this hotel barely managed a "Satisfied" rating is threefold: 1. Pyramid view. 2. Pyramid view. 3. Pyramid view. Without it, this hotel wouldn't be able to compete with an American standard Holiday Inn. As an aside: I also enjoyed the belly dancing performance at the Abu Nawas nightclub. Good fun!

We'd only stay in Cairo for one night so basically we just sleept at this lovely budget hotel. We did also try the resturant which was not excellent but of good quality. The bathroom were small and the shower stall were even smaller, making morning rituals somewhat challenging. But if you're travling on a budget and need a safe and nice place to stay I can really recommend this to you!
The hotel dates to the 1930s and is a charming example of that era. It's located in downtown Cairo but don't be chocked if you'll woken up by a rooster at 5 o'clock! Zamalek was the reason why I chose this hotel. Our room was at the last floor of the building, which offered wonderful view over the Nile. The bathroom was clean and so was the room. The staff from the reception were very helpful and kind. Nothing fancy but decent. The floor was a bit shaby at the last floor and they could have aired the room before our arrival. The peculiarity of our stay there was the noise made by the kids in the schools nearby. But what sound is more beautiful then the crystal sound of children laughing? Needless to say that here, a sin any other place in Egypt, if the booking is amde by a person from an Arabic country, the afres are a lot lower. Well, When the taxi driver left me in front of the hotel I thought he was kidding, it was in alley right beside Simaramis Hotel (5 star, next time Iīll stay there:D) and the building was falling apart..I went up to the 3rd floor by the stairs and then I saw a light; It was the reception, I think. Basically my stay there resumes to this: 1 - Really bad acomodation, the last time they vacumm the room or changed the beds was when Nefretiti ruled Egypt. 2 - Great view over the Nile and Cairo. (see pic. from my room ) 3 - Really cheap, 4 to 8 Euros a night 4 - The breakfast is bad even if u donīt taste it. 5 - City centre, near everything. In resume, if u donīt care (at all) about acomodation itīs ok, but if u do..well better stay in 5 star hotel, cause even 3 star hotels in Cairo donīt follow at all the European quality standarts...but I really dont give a s...If I wanted a resort I woud go to Sharm or other tourist packed place.
The Nile view, and my balcony. (completly ruined but still with that neo-romantic english architecture) Leave a Comment

If you are seeking a luxurious trip to Egypt, then the Four Seasons Hotel is the only place to stay. Yet you have a choice of two in Cairo! This tip is for the Nile Plaza one, located in Garden City (as opposed to the First Residence one, located in the Giza part of Cairo). I stayed at the Nile Plaza in April 2007 and the hotel proved to be as great as any Four Seasons around the world. The hotel is complete with restaurants, bar, spa, fitness centre, and a luxury department store. No complaints, but it is definitley more expensive than other five start hotels in Cairo. | | | | Golden Tulip Hotel Flamenco: Good value hotel by the Nile at Zamalek
Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
I stayed at Golden Tulip Hotel Flamenco for 4 nights during a visit to Cairo in November 2007. I paid 28 GBP per night for a standard single room with en-suite facilities and the inclusion of a hot buffet breakfast. I found several websites offering this hotel, but booked my stay via www.hotelclub.net - they charged my card in advance, and provided me with a voucher to present at reception upon arrival. Everything went smoothly. Location Hotel Flamenco is located in the leafy, embassy district of Zamalek, sitting on an island in the middle of the river Nile. The hotel is located on the banks of the Nile, offering excellent views from its top floor restaurant and bar. At 3am, the taxi journey from the airport to Hotel Flamenco took about 30 minutes. It could take considerably longer than that in heavy traffic. Similarly, the Pyramids at Giza were 15-20 minutes away by taxi, and the Khan al-Khalili bazaar about 10-15 minutes away. There are many cafes, shops and restaurants around the hotel, including a Pizza Hut, a McDonalds and a 24 hour Internet cafe right across the street. Zamalek is a pleasant place to stay in Cairo. The traffic is still fairly heavy, but far less so than in much of the city. The streets are shaded, the air feels fresher and there are plenty of international standard dining options close by. Bedroom My single room was clean and fairly well furnished. It contained a comfortable double bed, air conditioning, a mini fridge, satellite TV (with English language news channels), an armchair, a dressing table, bedside cabinets, a large double wardrobe, a telephone and a radio. The heavy curtains and the dark carpet made the room warm and cosy in winter. The en-suite shower room was medium sized (plenty big enough for my needs) and spotlessly clean. It contained a toilet, a washbasin, a shower, a hairdryer and complimentary toiletries. Fresh towels were provided each day and hot water was always available when I needed it.
. Breakfast A good all-you-can-eat buffet breakfast is included in the room rate. This includes an extensive choice of cereals, breads, fresh fruit, yoghurt, cold meats, cheeses, eggs, sausages, muffins, cakes, fruit juices, coffee and tea. My only small complaint is that the dining area is too small to cope with the crowds when a lot of people turn up for breakfast at the same time. Breakfast is available for several hours (approx 6am to 10am if memory serves correct), but you may need to wait for a table at busy times. General Hotel Flamenco is a large hotel with almost 170 rooms, ranging from single rooms like mine (which was spacious enough for me, and much larger than many single rooms I've stayed in) to large suites. The top floor of the hotel contains the Florencia Spanish Restaurant (serving a good choice of international dishes and offering superb views of the Nile) and the adjacent Sevilla Bar (where I enjoyed a local Stella beer). The hotel also includes the Carmen Pub, a Coffee Shop and the Postres patisserie shop, neither of which I visited. There is a small shop on the ground floor, selling postcards, souvenirs and a few essential items such as batteries. You can also buy stamps there and send your postcards from the postbox immediately outside the shop. The entrance of the hotel is guarded 24 hours a day and all guests must pass through a security scanner (similar to those at airports) when entering. I also noted the continuous presence of two armed police on the corner just outside the hotel. This was common throughout the city. I never felt threatened anywhere in Cairo, so I guess the seemingly excessive security measures are justified. A variety of tours (the Pyramids, the Citadel, the Museum, day trips to Alexandria, Port Said, Luxor...) can be booked from reception. A good value international standard hotel in a favourable location. I would highly recommend staying in Zamalek...and I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.
