I stayed at Le Meridien Luxor the very first time i came to Egypt back in 2003. I wasnt sure what to expect of Egypt, its always been a dream to travel here as i was interested in the history of Egypt when i was at school. When we first arrived i was amazed at how stunning this hotel was, it was like a palace inside & the staff were excellent.
The bellcaption is so sweet, his name is Mahmoud, we received a warm welcome from him & he even delivered flowers to my room which i thought was nice. He showed us around the hotel & we went to try some Shisha, this was when i became a true "Shisha Queen" as the Egyptians say to me. Hehe. I loved the taste of it, it was really nice.
The hotel has recently changed it name to The Nile Palace. I you are planning to go here then either ask for Meridien Luxor or Nile Palace because not all tour operators/travel agents have the new name.
The pool at Le Meridien Luxor is fabulous, you get a great view of the River Nile & the Valley of the Kings at the other side of the Nile. The pool is quite small & it is abit cold but its nice when you've been sunbathing for a while.
We paid for a Nile View room & it was well worth the extra cost, the views were unbelievable. I loved it. There is plenty to do at the hotel, shops, bars & there are a couple of restaurants too. The hotel is close to all the major attractions in Luxor too which is good.
Id recommend this hotel to anyone, i had a great time & would go back.

The Novotel in Luxor is in a great location set on the East Bank of the Nile, South of Luxor Temple. When we stayed here we paid extra for a Nile View and it was worth it, if you do not have a Nile View the view of the road is not that brilliant (although good to watch the Horse and Carriages below.
The Novotel is part of the Accor group who also own the Mercure Coralia, Winter Palace and Mercure Inn. I believe that this enables you to use the other hotels swimming pools and if you are on half board you can usually use at either of the hotels - but do check!
The hotel boasts a floating swimming pool which gives you excellent Nile views , there is also a pool bar to grab a snack. The garden at the Novotel is nice, there are some water fountains a pool table and a pizzeria at the far end. Once a week the Entertainment staff organise a pool competition. The Novotel used to have a disco on a boat that was moored next to the hotel but when we stayed it was not on every night. There is also a boat owned by the Novotel that does day cruises down to Dendara for about LE130 and this can be booked through the hotel. The cost includes the trip, a lovely buffet lunch and afternoon tea however drinks are extra.
The Breakfast is Buffet style as are most of the hotels in Luxor and eggs are cooked to order. Breakfast consists of the usual cereal, croissants, Danish pastries, toast, fresh fruit, yogurt, eggs, fried potatoes, beef sausages and tomatoes. Plus a wide range of fruit juices. Very nice!!
The lobby area near reception has a seating area bit is not particularly welcoming.
The bar at the Novotel is very nice and the barman are friendly, you can either drink inside or take your drinks outside. Be careful of the mozzies in summer as they will bite your ankles to death!
It can sometimes be a bit dead in the evenings as there is not really any entertainment ..

The Old Winter Palace is the oldest address in Luxor. It was built in 1886 to attract Europe's nobility and perhaps that is the reason for the Hotels name as many used to spend the Winter time in Egypt to enjoy the fabulous weather.
Howard Carter often stayed in the hotel despite having his own home on the West Bank. Apparently the guests of this hotel were the first to hear of the finding of Tut's treasures as it was posted on the hotels bulletin board.
I have never had the pleasure of staying in this hotel but have walked through its vast garden, lunched and used the swimming pool. One thing that struck me about the gardens of the Winter Palace was the beauty and the huge Palm trees.
I would definitely recommend the Winter Palace for Afternoon Tea on the Terrace. Here you will be served a proper English tea of sandwiches (cut in to triangles), tea and cake. You can enjoy the sites below of the carriage drivers carrying their passengers down the Corniche, the fantastic view of the Theban mountain over on the West Bank and if you stay long enough the site of the sun setting over the Nile.

The Movenpick is set on Crocodile Island and 4km south of Luxor centre. The rooms are bungalow style set amongst the hotels lush grounds. There is a swimming pool, tennis courts, sailing boats and even a little zoo where you can see the crocodiles,pelicans, donkeys etc. The Movenpick is great if you love peace and nature as you can take morning walks round the island or if you are a fitness fanatic an early morning jog round the running track. The flowers and trees are beautiful and I believe that you will see more wildlife and birds here than at any other hotel in Luxor.
The breakfasts are buffet style and are fantastic. Eggs are cooked to order and there is a great selection of fresh fruits, crossaint , pastries, oriental dishes such as fuul madames, omm ali,loads of different breads all baked on site, beef sausages, fried potatoes, grilled tomatoes, yoghurts and cereal. Mmmmmm!!!!!
If you decide to stay around the pool the waiters will bring the food and drink to you and are very attentive yet without being imposing. Afternoon tea is brought to you
round the pool which you can enjoy whilst listening to the classical music that is played everyday at sunset. The nile sunset combined with the sounds of the prayers floating hauntingly across the river from the mosques of the West Bank will give you goose bumps.
Everynight there is a themed buffet and on Oriental night there is a Galabeya party where everybody is dressed up and taken to another part of the island for Oriental food and a fantastic show of belly dancers and music. Not to be missed.
Overall a great hotel although very different to the others in Luxor in terms of its remote location. There are shuttle buses and boats into luxor (free) or of course you can pay for a taxi. My parents stay here twice a year and love it. My mother suffers from very bad arthiritus and therefore cannot walk far and do loads of siteseeing. This is therefore ideal for her as it is quiet and peaceful yet she can also venture into Luxor when she wants to.

We stayed at the Sofitel Karnak from 01 – 15 June this year and each day we congratulated ourselves for making such a good choice.
The hotel gardens are really lovely and extremely well looked after – it really is a picture at every turn.
The main pool with swim-up bar is excellent, there are plenty of comfortable sun beds with mattresses and parasols. During the morning and again in the afternoon there is water aerobics and water polo. At the towel station it is possible to borrow or hire a multitude of games or sports equipment – there is also a book exchange library. A little further away on the lawns going down towards the Nile there are more sun beds, from these you have a great view over the Nile towards the West Bank and the Valley of the Kings et al. Close by there is a further children’s pool with small waterside and magic mushroom water fountain.
Directly above the Ő Nile restaurant is the Sundowners Bar – this is open from about 4pm until midnight serving drinks and shisha pipes – this as the name suggests is a great place early evening to watch the sun set with a drink or two. Do be aware though that due to its close proximity to the Nile there are a few mosquitoes around. That said the hotel does a really good job of keeping them under control – they have plenty of electric fluorescent flying insect traps around and each evening they mist around the grounds and during the day and wash down all hard surfaces (walkways) with mosquito repellent. Don’t be put off by the thought of hordes of mosquitoes they are well behaved, or dead.
Finally, do I recommend Luxor – yes, and I will be going back, but only to the Sofitel Karnak. To be honest it was the only hotel we have been to where I would have been quite happy to stay for the entire 2 weeks without stepping foot outside. It was only as we were getting to the end of the first week that we realised we really ought to make the effort to see some of the sights.
Drinks etc – the bedroom minibar is very reasonably priced with drinks being the same as you would pay at one of the bars. Inside the main hotel building the main bar is Carter’s Bar – this is where the main evening entertainment is held and in actual fact isn’t too bad – experienced far worse in Cypriot hotels. They do try to vary it a bit with either a duo or group of four providing both Arabic and European music and songs. This is interspersed throughout the week with Karaoke evenings or Limbo dancing or Casino nights – the animation team do very well and provide just the right level of enthusiasm for their audience. There is also the Moorish café situated off the lobby which serves all types of drinks from mid-morning until late into the evening. Prices for drinks are I think good for Egypt and this class of hotel – certainly cheaper than at home. A 500ml bottle of Stella was EŁ18 and Sakhara was EŁ20. Alcoholic cocktails were all priced at EŁ35 and from comments I heard seemed to be good and have a fair quantity of alcohol in them. Diet Cola, Sprite and similar were I think, EŁ9 each for a 330ml can. The exchange rate whilst we were there was EŁ10.66 to Ł1 sterling.
Likewise if you wanted to eat during the day – meals could be ordered from the Palmerie Bar (pool bar) these were very good value – for example pizza with salad and French fries was approx EŁ34 and an enormous beefburger with salad and French fries was EŁ32.00. The menu was quite extensive ranging the sandwiches to steak and chicken fillets – none of it too expensive.
Transport into and out of Luxor is a commendable 11 times per day ranging from approx 0700 in the morning through to the last minibus back from Luxor around 1830 in the evening.
PS - I checked out all the other main hotels, Old & New Winter Palaces, Sheraton, Hilton (dump), Sonesta St George, Le Meridien & Movenpick - the Sofitel Karnak is definitely the best - don' believe me? - then pay a visit whilst you are there and you won't make the same mistake twice. The Sonesta St George is a 5 star hotel and is beautiful. It has several restaurants, including Japanese, Italian and Egyptian. It has cafes, a health club, shops, pool. The staff here will bend over backwards to help you, especially down by the pool side where you will be handed towels and if you try to move your sunbed, the attendants will rush over to do it for you. The breakfast is amazing with such a large choice. There is even a Japanese food selection to choose from and meats such as sausages and chicken with vegetables! The lobby is spectacular with a large chandelier. This hotel was not right in the centre of Luxor - it was a 5-10 minute walk.

We spent two weeks at the Sofitel in Karnak. and it was first class all the way. the food (buffet style) was good with plenty of variation, always something to suit the many different nationalities. The staff were very helpfull the rooms were always clean and tidy, plenty of space in the gardens for sunbathing and the pool was cleaned every morning, The childrens pool was set to one side were they could splash around to there hearts content while there was plenty of loungers for we older folk to soak up the sun. Two boats were provided to take you to Luxor (free of charge) and would bring you back, there is no better way to arrive at your hotel after a days sight seeing than down the Nile by boat. We give the Sofitel 10 out of 10 in all catagories. Most highly recommended.

The boats have five tourist stars. I do not have wide experience of river and sea cruises. However it seemed to me, that the boats on the Nile are comfortable and convenient enough.
The area of a cabin is not less than the standard area of a room in a hotel.
I did not feel lack of a place and claustrophobia. Big panoramic windows provide the good views outside.
These windows, and also the big mirror which has a size almost in the whole wall create illusion of greater space, than the cabin really occupies.
The cabin allows two passengers to be placed with convenience. However I have paid a single room. Therefore place was too much for me. The second bed has appeared superfluous. The conditioner was very important and vital component of the cabin in conditions of hot Egypt.
How many times, coming back into the cabin from the excursion, I breathed with relief being caused by cool after severe African heat outside. Presence of a toilet and a shower in each cabin also made the cruise comfortable. Unfortunately, the TV was accepting only two programs. First I was upset because of it a little, but did not notice this inconvenience further. Every day has been saturated by excursions, and I hadn't time for watching TV. The amount of passengers onboard the ship can be estimated by amount of places at restaurant. I have counted 108 places. I have drawn a conclusion that two full buses of tourists can be placed on a ship. I've seen that it has been occupied less than half of tables at restaurant on our ship.
Therefore I have solved, that our ship has been filled only on a half. The group of Russian tourists consisted of 34 person. In the group of Frenchmen I have counted about 20 people. I read that about 250 ships are making cruises between Luxor and Aswan. It means that simultaneously in a way can be about 25000 tourists.
However a part of ships are making cruises in the opposite direction from Aswan to Luxor. So travel agencies are trying to dissolve streams of tourists and to avoid a chaos. Theme: OtherComparison: about averageAddress: Luxor-Aswan

The Emilio hotel is a upper mid range hotel with a good location in the centre, just a few blocks from the Nile. Shops and markets are nearby. Near the entrance of the hotel you can hire bikes.
Ask for a room with a balcony and view, because there are some terrible rooms without a view and balcony!
In the Netherlands it is possible to book this rather cheap hotel for a week with a cheap charter flight of Transavia on a package base.
The hotel has a pool and chairs in the shade on the roof. The view at the Luxor Temple, the Nile and the town is very nice.
